Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - brothers in harms.......way
I have read several books about the first world war including those with interviews of people who fought in France and this novel stands out in its portrayal of real people and real events. I was captivated by the way, through the use of letters and journals, that it paints a picture about what it was like for one family as four brothers served in France. The book looks beyond the British 'stiff upper lip' and reveals how the war took its toil on the mother and father both emotionally paralysed by their losses. I recommend this as a captivating and educational read.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Will they, Won't they?
Once I'd read 'The Pupil', I was hooked and I've read and re-read the whole series. Captivated by the characters, drawn into the enclosed community of Caper Court, I snapped this book up and polished it off in a couple of hours.

But I cheated. I quickly decided that I had little interest in the Ukranian Money Laundering sub-plot. Disappointingly, it posed few ethical dilemmas for Leo Davies. So I skipped those bits. Rachel was drearily single, Leo's new girl-friend was tiresome, and like, I dunno, whether I can bear to follow, like, a seventeen year old school-girl's sloaney, like, drivel, right? (Gawd, I hate it when authors slow me down by doing that to young people's speech.) So I skipped those bits too.

I was left with the shenanigans and rivalries within Chambers and the relationship between Leo Davies and the Pupil. I'd have preferred 200 pages on these two plots alone.

On the whole, a darn good read if you're new to Caro Fraser.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - eagerly anticipated but disappointing
I had been waiting to read this book for so long but in the end I was left rather disappointed.

The book itself looked amateurish - very slim at around 200 pages. All the components were supposedly there character wise although I felt that much of the detail which made the earlier books so engaging was missing. There were few mentions of the court or any of the real case details which set the series apart from other romance novels. It was rather as if someone else had decided to write the 7th book and made an attempt which although technically had all the characters and so on did not read like the other six.

The first six books combined many characters, storylines and details and I have re-read them many times. The characters exuded real passion for law as well as each other. They were also in some way timeless. This book dwelt heavily on contemporary references (some of which seemed almost out of date even a few months later) and did not build layers of interest and approached the law almost as a tedious setting than with any real passion. Leo, Rachel, Oliver & 5 Caper Court were all present but not in the way that they had been previously. Felicity and Anthony appear but not to the extent which I felt they deserved.

I am in no way suggesting that this book should be ignored just that I would hope Fraser gives the eighth book more thought if and when she chooses to write it (and not to leave it so long next time).

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Let down by Amazon
Ordered this book as soon as found it was to be released and still waiting for delivery. Received e-mail to say unavailable and order cancelled only to go on Amazon site and find that it is available and they have accepted my order for it. Disappointed to find reviews of a book that I am told is not available, not up to usual Amazon standards of delivery.
