Although very different, 'The lost village' reminded me of two books: 'English Journey' by J.B. Priestley and 'Notes from a small island' by Bill Bryson. Like both books 'Villages' mourns the loss of typical British qualities, but it lacks the anger of both, and the wit of the latter. And so in comparison it becomes a bit 'flat'. Askwith seems to be too much of a gentleman to really get angry about what he sees, and share his anger with his readers. Still, it is a very well written account of Askwith's 'quest', he meets and describes very well a very colourful bunch of characters and he knows how to tell a lot of anecdotes.
