I had been on the trail of my great grandfather a corporal in the 9th KOYLI. I only had a few family myths, a few sepia photos, and the date he was KIA @ Ypres. As I turned the pages of this book from 1914 until his fateful day in October 1917 a melancholy descended. How had he survived so much? What of the wounds I could see in a leave photo after the Somme? The text only scratched the surface, raised more questions and turned this bit of family history into a hazzy nightmare. A black and white photo in the book shows the battlefield where I guess his remains lie burried. Perhaps I will take the book and a map and go for walk and try to understand a bit more.
