I bought this book for my two boys who are six and seven years old, it looked great to me. Unfortunately after reading a few of the stories my boys said the book was just plain boring! Maybe it would be better suited for girls??? there are so many lovely books out there and I liked the idea of having lots of different stories all in one book, but it didn't work this time !!!

This is a story about four red haired children, Jim and Susan, the twins and their younger sister and brother, Nicolette and David. Their grandfather had been first-class at tennis, so had their father before he had been shot in the leg and could not play anymore.

Mr. and Mrs. Heath lived in Tulse Hill with their four children and Annie, the cook and general help and Miss Pinn, the governess, who they called Pinny. 'A Candle in the Dark' by Adele Geras, is set in 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The main characters, Clara (11 years old), and Maxi (5 years old), live in Germany. They are Jewish.

The family are reasonably happy, living in Germany, although they are nervous, because the Nazis, who hated Jews, rule Germany. One night, the Nazis break into the family's shop. Clara and Maxi's mother decides to evacuate them to the English countryside, where she hopes they will be safe. Clara knows the reason why they have to be sent sway, but Maxi is too young to understand.

wow! This book was truly great. It was funny, sad, romantic, and I loved the way that the Greek Gods and Goddesses were worked into the plot. I would recomend this to teenage girls who love reading historical fiction like me!

What an excellent read! I thoroughly agree with all the previous reviewers about the merits of this book. If you love family sagas and enjoy finding out about hidden skeletons in closets, then this book will suit you. As a previous reviewer has already suggested, there is a secret at the heart of the book. I had an idea about halfway through about what this secret might be, but I was nonetheless sufficiently intrigued to carry on reading to the very end, to find out whether I was right (I was!).
Some parts of the story were really quite heart-rending and you do find yourself drawn into this story almost from the beginning.

I had heard lots of good things about this book from both my friends and teachers at school. I decided to read it and after the first 3 chapters i was extremely bored. Unless you really understand the mythology behind this story it is very hard to follow. One of the worst books i have ever read. Very boring and hard to understand.

this is such a great book - i just couldn't put it down!! i really enjoyed looking for the references to fairy tales, and thought it was really cleverly woven together. Adèle Geras deals with some pretty heavy stuff, but she does it sensitively, and the whole thing fits together beautifully.
