City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Verneys: Love, War and Madness in Seventeenth-century England
.The Verneys: Love, War and Madness in Seventeenth-century England

by: Adrian Tinniswood

April 03, 2008
This is history at its best - it's readable, compelling and thoroughly enjoyable. Tinniswood's book achieves many goals in one - a fascinating social history, meticulous biography, powerful family saga, and not least it is a really good and engaging read.

The tale begins with Sir Francis Verney who ran away from his teenage wife in 1608, sold off much of the Verney property, converted to Islam and became one of the most feared pirates on the Barbary Coast. Carry on to read about Bess, who ran off with a clergyman; Cary, a heavy gambler, and Henry who was obsessed with horse racing; not to mention those involved in the English Civil War; Mall, who became pregnant out of marriage, or one of the later relatives who was hanged at Tyburn. ... City Travel Guides Discounted Books : By Permission of Heaven: The Story of the Great Fire of London
.By Permission of Heaven: The Story of the Great Fire of London

by: Adrian Tinniswood

July 01, 2004
This is the first time I've read anything by the author Adrian Tinniswood and I wasn't disappointed.

I've never read anything about the Great Fire of London before and we didn't cover it in history at school to any great length, all I knew was were it started and what a mess it created.

Adrian has done a lot of research for this historical book and has included a lot of information. He's looked at it for all sides and how it affected not just the Londoners but the rest of the country as well.

The fire happened before the bubonic plague had finished and during the Anglo-Dutch war. There have been conspiracies about whom and why it had been started and this book answers a lot of those questions.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : His Invention So Fertile: A Life of Christopher Wren
.His Invention So Fertile: A Life of Christopher Wren

by: Adrian Tinniswood

May 02, 2002
Tinniswood's new book is the first of a string of new biographies of Wren due out over the next few years. Tinniswood is a writer first and a historian second and he was succeeded in producing a book that is undoubtedly highly readable. The tone is, as a colleague described, positively conspiratorial and the reader is seduced into turning each of the 463 pages to find out what happens next. This is thoroughly admirable in a history book and there is no doubt that Tinniswood has succeeded in his aim of producing the most readable account of Wren's life to date. He is also extremely good at setting the scene, quoting from a wide range of sources from the period, rumour as well as fact. In view of all this it seems mean to find fault, but as people will ... City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Art Deco House
.The Art Deco House

by: Adrian Tinniswood

November 17, 2005
I have a love of all things Art Deco, and this book has helped build my passion and understanding. Its probably not a book you'd read from beginning to end, but instead dip in and out of. For this purpose, its perfectly designed.

Each chapter is an individual creation (house, apartment, housing estate....). It gives the background on the architect and who the building was commissioned for. So, its not just a review of the architecture, but puts the building and its creation into social context. As well as including a few of the more well known Art Deco buidlings (such as the Isokon apartments) it includes many that you probably don't know.

As you would expect from a book of this nature, it includes lots of wonderful pictures. Many ... Read More:
