Another decent addition to the Complete Judge Dredd collection - OZ was never one of my favourite storylines but it's still pretty entertaining. However, I must agree with the previous review, the cover is awful. Gone are the classy, simple, 2-tone covers of the previous 10 volumes. It it's place is this gaudy mess. What's a matter Rebellion, can't your art director choose more than 10 colours without running out of ideas? Do us a favour, buy him a Pantone book and go back to the earlier style.

No mega-epics, Dark Judges or majorly continuity-important stories in here, but a very consistent collection of action-packed one offs and shorter stories. Grant and Wagner had really hit their stride by this point and although there's no Ezquerra the quality of the art in general is more consistent in this collection than ever with the old guard as brilliant as ever but nothing letting the side down (Brendan McCarthy really steps up his game brilliantly and Kevin O'Neill's twisted take on Dredd appears for I think the first time). Also, we get introduced to Kenny Who, Stan Lee(briefly) and The Taxidermist. Brilliant.

No mega-epics, Dark Judges or majorly continuity-important stories in here, but a very consistent collection of action-packed one offs and shorter stories. This volume starts off on a pretty low-key note after the wall-to-wall brilliance of book 4's stories. Dredd investigating the Mega-rackets is inoffensive, entertaining stuff but not really anything special. It's when Judge Death makes his long-awaited comeback that the magic starts to happen. This five-parter, lushly illustrated by Brian Bolland, represent some of the finest pages ever seen in sequential comics - and contains the single most iconic panel in the history of the Dredd strip. You'll know the one when you see it.

this a big book, a hefty book but when you are dealing with judge dredd they don`t do things small, the big story is the judge child, another excellent dredd epic, my wife thinks i`m mad reading these again but she does`nt understand the thrill power behind it ,poor woman !!!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased this title as volume 1 was out of stock at the time. I couldn't have been more lucky!! The intro story (portrait of a mutant) gives you all the background you need to johnny's world and introduces the main characters brilliantly. The rest of the book is chock full of quality strips from there on in and even ties up loose ends from Portrait. Don't get me wrong this is awesome stuff but if your not a fan of early Wagner/Grant 2000ad strips then this is probably not for you although it is the best of the bunch. I find it takes a little effort to get into this sort of stuff but once you have youl be hooked!

Strontium Dog has to be one of the best strips from 2000AD, and when the quality of that comic was so high (in its glory days) that is some praise. In this story Johnny Alpha gets a new partner in the shapely form of Durham Red, the vampire vixen that the video game character Blood Rayne shamelessly pilfered.

Everyone who has made it thus far in the series should know what to expect by now. Suffice to say that this is more of the same, continuing the very high standard set by the previous books.

By this stage - some nine years into the strip's history - writers John Wagner and Alan Grant were so comfortable with Dredd and his world that they scarcely put a foot wrong, in some 300-400 pages. Near every tale in here is a gem, often in art as well as script.

There are no epics, and little happens to bother Dreddworld continuity overmuch - Mega-city One gains a new chief judge when McGruder bows out, and teenage rebel 'Chopper' makes his second appearance after 'Unamerican Grafitti' way back in Case Files 4 in the excellent 'Midnight Surfer - but ... Rebellion collecting together all of future lawman Dredd's adventures from the beginning has been a stroke of genius, the large volumes a perfect way to while away an afternoon and see how it all started. It's also highlighted how much the approach to the strip has matured since the start, with the first book in particular being fairly simplistic kid-oriented stuff but steadily gaining maturity and sophistication, ensuring that as far as these collections go each new addition is generally better than the last. Volume 8 doesn't include any of the highly regarded "mega-epics", but is still a consistently entertaining collection of shorter tales, including the return of a couple of major enemies(Mean Machine makes a welcome return).
