"Ottoman" tells the story of four generations of the Hawkwood family. An English master gunner called John Hawkwood travels to Constantinople in 1448 to help defend the Byzantine Empire against the Ottoman turks. But after a shipwreck he offers his service to the Ottomans instead. Four generations of his family continue to serve the Sultans, through the time of Suleiman the Magnificent.
But eventually John Hawkwood's great-grandson finds his word of honour forsworn by his turkish overlords in a hideous act of betrayal, and it is time for another shift of loyalties ...
As an adventure story this works fairly well. The cruelty of many characters in the story does reflect that the author is writing about a cruel age.
