I was given this book as a gift and thoroughly enjoyed it. I concur with other reviewers so won't waffle on about how good it is. Why only 4 stars? There's nothing on the importance of companion planting when using organic methods and without this, my veg patch wouldn't survive. This info can be researched elsewhere, so other than that, I would recommend this book, especially for a beginner. I'm just about to buy another copy for my best friend who is just that!

.The Complete How to be a Gardener

I have lots of gardening books, some of them are even useful. But this is the best I've found for stirring up confidence and enthusiasm. I just need to browse its pages for a few minutes and I want to go and pull on by gardening shoes and gloves. As a reference its not perfect but as an introduction and ideas crucible its great. And the two halves blend beautifully, you barely see the join. There is very little repetition.

First the negative, its not the ultimate month by month gardening handbook as claimed on the cover but it is good. Lovely pictures and the text is full of Alan's banter I like the checklist in each month to remind me of the things I should do or should have done which in years past I forget until is was a little late. Looking through the book in the short days on January and February aching for spring is the book at its best for me. Good for motivation for any gardener wondering to do what when however I find RHS Gardening Through The Year much better 4 stars for Alan 5 stars for the RHS. Better still do what I did and buy both and shorten winter

Another brilliant book by Alan Titchmarsh,he certainly knows how to spin a good yarn.He manages to bring to life the ruggedness of Cornwall and the lives of his characters, the neighbourliness of boat owners(including a very independant cat) and through it all a nice chunk of a love story,what more could anyone want? My advice...Buy and enjoy this book.

I defy even Scrooge (or Mr T's harshest critic) not to raise a smile with this one. Jane Austen and J M Barrie would be proud. Well possibly! A mixture of traditional Xmas stories and songs, with some of the funniest 'versions' of popular literature and panto. Some of it is lucky to be in print! If you have a sense of humour, this is most definitely for you.

I have just started reading this book, what a great read. Alan Titchmarsh can write very well. I love the characters and the story and I have guessed how it will go. I can't put this book down either i am on chapter 13 already in two days and can't wait to see how the rest of the story goes. Well written Mr Titchmarsh i think this would do excellent as a film or play and certainly a sequel would be in order here

I'd only ever read a couple of Titchmarsh books about gardening and perhaps had him a little bit stereotyped, so I was wary of reading his autobiography. I am so glad I did. The book is a delightfully nostalgic collection of themed recollections starting from when he was just over one year old (he admits some memories may in actual fact be unconsciously constructed from later experiences). He describes life as a child in Ilkley in the 1940s and 50s, evoking many similar memories of my own of that time (though mine originate further north). Particularly poignant is his tale of a 5-hour journey in a steam train to London looking expectantly out of the window in the hope of seeing the famous 'Mallard', the fastest engine of the time (like many boys he was mad about ... I was given this book as a present for Christmas by my family. Within the last year, I have developed a true love of nature, so this seemed like the perfect gift. To be honest, looking at the Amazon page, I am quite surprised that THE NATURE OF BRITAIN has received such mixed reviews. One has said that the book is not definitive - well, perhaps this is the case, but it is meant to be a celebration of our landscape and our wildlife, and in this sense it is a triumph.

The book is divided into different sections covering different habitats; woodland, coast and islands, fields and meadows etc. Similar to the BBC series which accompanies this book, there are glorious colour photographs to bring to life what is being described.

What a delight,I loved it .The storyline is wonderful so is Rosie herself. A slightly outrageous,whacky mature !!!lady who is not going down without a fight and is determined to live life to the full, even if it does`nt meet with all of her family`s approval. Whoever heard of a lady that age getting herself arrested, running away from home, then turning up on her grandsons doorstep,and what a great relationship they have.There are so many surprises in this book.Alan Titchmarsh has done it again.
