This is an absolute must-have if you have any interest walking. Even if you have no interest in walking you can't fail to be taken in by the consistently detailed drawings and conversational prose. Each and every page contains the most beautiful pen drawn maps, views and very accurate drawings of the Lakeland fells themselves. Further, Wainwright takes the reader through each fell climb in his own handwriting which, startlingly, justifies to both margins with not a hyphenated word in sight - a feat in itself which I've not seen elsewhere. Perhaps I'm impressed because I'm a graphic designer but I really don't see how anyone could be disappointed with this fascinating book.

This is the 5th book of a series of 7 which were written between 1956 and 1965. The series covers the entire Lake District. This book covers the area north of Keswick and includes Skiddaw, Blencathra and the Caldbeck Fells.
My reasons for recommending the book are as follows:
1. The author is an expert. He has covered the ground, and the information in the book is a small selection of his total knowledge.
2. The guide is accurate. Minor changes have of course happened in the 40 plus years since publication, such as the disappearance of the railway. But the fells are the same. If Wainwright shows a safe route it can be relied on.
3. The author loves the area. He wrote the books initially for himself as a tribute to the hills. ... Read More:

This special edition boxed set of seven Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland must rank amongst the finest and detailed set of guide books for walkers and lovers of the Lake District, situated in Cumbria, England.
The meticulous detail and minute accuracy, together with the drawings, sketches and notes make these guide books unique.
Guides to the Lakeland have appeared since 1770, so these guides are therefore not original, but they are distinctive in concentrating on individual fells, over 200 of them, and are not walking tour guides.
Book 1 initially starts with fells over 1400 feet, but in later books fells of over 1000 feet are included, but there is one fell included of 985 feet which is noted as a 'protuberance' rather than as a fell.

I've been a Lakeland enthusiast for quite a number of years, but it was only on my most recent trip that I was in a bookshop and noticed seven little white books... everywhere. I didn't really think much of it, until I was bought one for my birthday - book seven. It had the Great Gable walk in it, a mountain which I still haven't found the time to climb, but I'll get round to it.

I read it from cover to cover - unusual, considering it's a guidebook, and was immediately hooked. Wainwright has classified and categorised the Lake District so perfectly and so completely that if you have walked the paths he describes, you can almost see the views in your mind as you read the books.
