I agree with the other reviewer - I too had access to a few different guides on my recent trip to Rome and wasn't even sure if I would take the Blue Guide as it looked a little uninpiring with just tons and tons of text - I admit to liking a book with a few nice pictures and easy to use lists of things to see etc. However, this ended up being the book I used most. Rome is such a fascinating place with so much history and meaning and frankly, the other books were pretty useless apart from giving you something to flick through and see what you may be interested in doing (apart from the Eyewitness guide which gives a map of the Sistine Chapel roof- clearly explaining each of the pictures - well worth having). Once you get to any given place, ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Florence (9th edn) (Blue Guides)
by: Alta Macadam
April 04, 2005
It wasn't my first visit to Florence, but it was the one I shall remember the best. The circumstances were not perfect - reading in every type of shop while my better half availed herself of the sales at the start of August. Seats were short, so half of what I read was read standing up. But I was gripped by my book - the Blue Guide to Florence.
It is the ideal companion to anyone who is attracted to Florence not by the desire to "tick it" off the list of world famous tourist destinations, but who wants to understand what makes Florence special, who made it so special, why and how. In particular the book and the town together give a window on the Early & Mid Renaissance period in which humanity appears to have taken not merely a ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Sicily (Blue Guides)
by: Alta MacAdam
1994-03
I bought this book hoping for a departure from the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide type of guide. Going by the other two reviews here I felt the Blue Guide would fit the bill exactly. Sadly, I sent it back as it was unsuitable for our planned trip as it centres pretty heavily on the historical, writing in fantastic detail about the Roman ruins etc. but for us, way too much. It is also very dense and almost impenatratable if you just want a casual look-see over a cup of coffee. Ho-hum, back to the Rough Guide with regret.
