. Finland (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Andy Symington
April 01, 2006
LP does have better and worse books of the places in Europe (those to the well organized and covered places like Malta or the Canary Islands are really not necessary). This one has for many years been one of my favourite LPs. This because there are still few good detailled guides about Finland, and the book for once does cover travel for both the low budget traveller and those who want to travel more in luxury. Giving also good (although not extensive) information about people, culture, language (of which not a lot is well known outside the country) I would recommend this one to all travellers to Finland, even if Finland actually is a country with excellent tourist office (both national and per place)providing good information on almost all ... . Costa De La Luz (Footprint Travel Guide)
by: Andy Symington
February 25, 2005
It is a real shame for Symington that the second review was written: I found this guide a very useful companion when holidaying in the region. Although we weren't using it for accommodation or transport, the listings for eateries, shops, bars and clubs were excellent and spot on. As for the write ups for places and sights, they were also completely representative and helped us make the most of our time on the coast. At no point were we disappointed. Well done on a fantastic guidebook.

. Northern Spain (Footprint Handbooks)
by: Andy Symington
April 27, 2007
We spent 4 months in Northern Spain in 2005 and took this book with us as a guide and reference book for general information. The only good thing I can say about it us that it fitted in the cubby box in the LandRover other than that we could have used it for loo roll. When you are actually on the ground, in the area travelling around and reading the book, you wonder whether the author has ever set foot there. Don't bother, just purchase the right Michelin map and go for it!! Happy travelling.

. Andalucia (Footprint Handbooks)
by: Andy Symington
April 27, 2007
I bought this book for a recent visit to Granada and to be honest I was a bit disappointed. A word of warning - do not rely on the maps in this book to find your way around. Granada is a mass of cobbled one-way streets and this book's maps were no help - after 3hrs we abandoned the car and found our way on foot after buying a cheap street-map. While the book does give detail of some good tapas bars it omitted to say that the vegetarian restaurant and tapas bar it recommends close at 4.00pm at this time of year. While I understand Andalucia is a big place to try to condense into a travel guide, I think that in this case the writers perhaps made it too concise!

. Great Britain (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: David Else, Oliver Berry, Nicky Crowther, Fionn Davenport, Martin Hughes, Sam Martin, Etain O'Carroll, Becky Ohlsen, Andy Symington
May 01, 2005
This is a large book- over 1000 pages, and it aims to be a single, comprehensive guide to Britain. It begins with a section on travel advice such as tips about safety, information about currency and safety and information about travelling to Britain and within Britain. Basically, information for before you travel. But I would question the appeal of this kind of printed material. All this information can be found out quite easily online, and online sources are naturally much more up to date.
In the intro, and throughout the book, they make remarkable generalisations. "English pubs general..." " The British public usually..." I hope people don't take this too seriously!
Also this book is not re-written, it is simply updated. ... Read More:

. Bilbao (Footprint Pocket Handbooks)
by: Andy Symington
October 30, 2002
A welcome change from the style of the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide series. It's written from a personal point-of-view, with a dry humour, and gives the feeling that the author has a real passion for the region and knows his subject well. This is a refreshing departure from the written-by-committee style of so many guidebooks. Having said that, it's a dainty morsel - pocket-sized, and though the information is well-written, it can also be a little on the brief side. It is frustrating that only maps of Bilbao city itself are included - a bit of a pain when you venture the short distance to the seaside suburbs and find yourself going round in circles! When it comes to bar and restaurant entries, the pricing levels (as with so many guides) seem ... Read More:
