. Ripe for the Picking
by: Annie Hawes
April 03, 2003
Read this book whilst on holiday in Liguria - quite appropriate considering this is the subject of this outstanding novel by Annie Hawes. It tells the tale of an English woman who has relocated to a little cottage in the hills above Diano Marina, just along the coast from Imperia, in the charmingly un-exploited region of Liguria, Italy. Superbly written, very funny and, as I can personally attest, and accurate portrayal of Ligurian life. This is one of the 'happiest' books I've read in a long time. Thoroughly recommended.

. Extra Virgin: Amongst the Olive Groves of Liguria
by: Annie Hawes
April 26, 2001
what a lovely read this is, nicely suprising & not at all like the usual "year in a foreign country" type stuff. The stories of the Ligurian way of thinking "no swimming in the sea except in the height of summer - this brings on Flu"......"germans who horror of horror drink wine WITHOUT FOOD!!! GASP GASP"...."bottled wine is akin to poison & not even made from grapes".......Its also interesting that this was set many many years ago...before we all ate olive oil/sundried tomatoes/olives/tomatoes on the vine etc etc as a matter of course....funny & laigh out loud...i have since bought her next book & will be enjoying that very soon

. Journey to the South
by: Annie Hawes
July 07, 2005
I really enjoyed this latest offering from Annie Hawes. Her wonderful descriptions of the people she met in Calabria are so realistic. Maybe it is because I now live in Italy but much of her writing seemed relevant to life here in Lazio. I have to say though I do wonder how some of the personalities featured would react if they were ever to read about themselves!!

. Extra Virgin: A Young Woman Discovers the Italian Riviera, Where Every Month Is Enchanted
by: Annie Hawes
2001-01
If ever you've dreamed of establishing residence in a foreign country, but have never had the nerve to actually do it, then EXTRA VIRGIN is a delightful escape for you, the armchair expatriate. In 1983, Annie Hawes and her sister Lucy, two young, single English lasses, accept employment as rose grafters on the Italian Riviera in the small town of Diano San Pietro. The fact that the author, Annie, knew nothing about rose grafting possibly reflects youth's eternal optimism. In any case, the rose season over, the two sisters are gently maneuvered by a crafty local into purchasing a derelict farmhouse amidst the olive groves above the town. The book spans at least a decade's worth of memories, and it's not always clear when in that timespan a particular ... Read More:
