City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Poetics (Penguin Classics)
.Poetics (Penguin Classics)

by: Aristotle

September 26, 1996
If you have an interest in writing, or in Literature, or even philosophy or psychology, then Aristotle's Poetics is a very good book for you to read: Aristotle had a burning desire to understand the drives and ambitions of human beings -- he yearned to understand the human world. In the book, Malcolm Heath explains (very well, I might add) the thoughts of Aristotle, concerning his understanding of the human necessity for expression. If you want to be a writer, or want to comprehend the roots of Literature, Poetics is a vital source of essential and fundamental information. Heath additionally refers to many of Aristotle's other notes in order to present an unbiased and comprehensive case. I very much recommend this book to anyone, especially ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Politics (Classics)
.The Politics (Classics)

by: Aristotle

November 19, 1981
Aristotle was an important thinker, born in 384 BCE at Stagirus (a Greek colony), who is considered by many the founder of the realist tradition in Philosophy. He wrote many noteworthy books, among which "The Politics" stands out. "The Politics" is one of the first books I read at university, and even though it took me a lot of time to read it, I ended up being grateful to the professor that included it as obligatory reading material for History of Political Ideas I :)
In "The Politics", the author begins by analyzing the human being, that is in his opinion a political animal by nature. Afterwards, he explains what are, for him, the origins of the polis: family, small village and then, polis. Aristotle says that even though the polis is ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Nicomachean Ethics (Penguin Classics)
.The Nicomachean Ethics (Penguin Classics)

by: Aristotle

January 29, 2004
Aristotle was a philosopher in search of the chief good for human beings. This chief good is eudaimonia, which is often translated as 'happiness' (but can also be translated as 'thriving' or 'flourishing'). Aristotle sees pleasure, honour and virtue as significant 'wants' for people, and then argues that virtue is the most important of these.

In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle makes the claim that happiness is something which is both precious and final. This seems to be so because it is a first principle or ultimate starting point. For, it is for the sake of happiness that we do everything else, and we regard the cause of all good things to be precious and divine. Moreover, since happiness is an activity of the soul in accordance with ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : 101 Dressage Exercises for Horse and Rider
.101 Dressage Exercises for Horse and Rider

by: Jec Aristotle Ballou

October 28, 2005
On first review I thought this was a helpful book with a number of exercises which as the sales blurb says "gives exercises for all levels of rider". Unfortunately the reality is that there are too many pages filled with dummed down exercises. It may have been perhaps useful to have included such things a "the carrot stretch" to remind us all to add these sorts of things into our training regime - but I don't think it needs 2 pages even to demonstrate to a complete novice. There are a couple of helpful exercises but there are much better examples of this sort of book on the market.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Nicomachean Ethics (Dover Thrift Editions)
.The Nicomachean Ethics (Dover Thrift Editions)

by: Aristotle

1998-11
Previous reviewers have provided an excellent overview of Ethics, which I shall not try to match. However, I should like to make an observation concerning the Dover Thrift edition of the work.

Despite being published in 1998, the translation itself dates from 1911. This creates certain problems for readers new to Aristotle and not versed in Ancient Greek.

Firstly, the translation, although at times quite fascinating and even beautiful in its use of English, takes a remarkably esoteric approach to the English language, with a highly individual choice of vocabulary and word order. Aristotle's logic is already difficult to follow, given its density and context. The style used in the translation compounds the difficulty, meaning ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Poetics (Dover Thrift)
.Poetics (Dover Thrift)

by: Aristotle

July 21, 1997
I do not think it is necessary here to reiterate the timelessness and importance of The Poetics on Western Theatre and writing.

A quick note on the Butcher's translation that although it is very to the point easy to understand, it is, in my opinion, oversimplified. Important terminology is missing to be replaced with everyday language.
Maybe this is a plus for some people but I ended up getting another translation to read alongside - this has proven to confirm the previous assessment.

Of course the price of this version is certainly a plus

If, like me, you don't read Greek, this is the best set of English translations there is. If you want to have a lot of Aristotle's writings to hand, this edition of his works, in two volumes edited by Jonathan Barnes, is almost universally recognized as the best thing to get hold of. (Do not listen to the first reviewer! Aristotle's thought is very rarely stale and never easy. And we can hardly complain that there are no commentaries in this excellent edition of translations.)
