We purchased this book after reading other reviews and were very disappointed. Much of the information was factually incorrect, we disagreed with hotel and restaurant recommendations and often found them to be closed down or some of the worst places we stayed or ate if we did use them. In many cases we wondered if the guide writers had even been to the places and throughout south america these books could be found in any secondhand shop that sold english books!

Also, prices are quoted in USD not local currency which makes it virtually impossible to use them as a reference. Overall very disappointing!

I felt compelled to share my positive experiences with this book. It was like a bible to me when I travelled round South America. From Colombia to Brazil it guided me safely along and I got to visit a few gems that I would not have know about if I had had the Lonely Planet with me. Also I liked the way it lists if the hostels have hot water or not. I had to lend it to so many people who were using the lonely planet, and the number of times fellow backpackers followed me from the bus because I was the only one with a footprint guide, and therefore a map of the town, well lets just say I lost count. I used the hardback edition of this guide and can't wait to use the new paperback version, which is much easier to transport, although the content is exactly the same in quality, the added benefits are superior, ie, colour maps, colour pictures (what a luxury, especially important for Brazil - a land of contrasts), the great essentials section is extremely useful - you have to try it and you will be ever-converted. It covered my trip to Salvador, Pantanal and Rio, as well as Paraty and reaches the parts other guidebooks don't cover - well done to such a small publisher - sorry LP can't return.

Having just returned from a trip to Peru, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, I can honestly say the Footprint guide is superb. There's just all the important information you need, with detailed transport information and everything you need to know to visit those "special" places. It may be short on glossy photos but who needs them when you're visiting the places anyway? The people I travelled with tossed their Lonely Planet guides in the bin and borrowed my Footprint Guide instead.

My boyfriend and I recently spent a week staying in Cusco and the Sacred Valley and we found this book to be invaluable. It had so much information in it we realised we didn't have nearly enough time to explore this fascinating part of the world!
I particularly liked the the fact that it contained loads of things to do outside of Cusco (other than the Inca Trail!) and was very informative on getting to Machu Picchu by train.
I have used Footprint books in the past for other parts of the world and have found them to be of a consistently high standard. I would certainly recommend them to other independent travellers!
