. A Foreign Field
by: Ben Macintyre
July 01, 2002
This book seems to have received mixed reviews and I would agree that it fares better in parts than others. However, the unmistakable quality of the writing and the research, merits more than a casual glance at this book.
It is true that it is primarily a love story, a story of great injustice and one of overwhelming sadness for the remaining victim - the daughter. It is also a wonderful depiction of the times and breaks your heart to read the realities of the mind-numbing atrocity that is war, of so many lost sons. We can never "make it better" but perhaps we can always remember. By reading this book, I believe we can try.
I would recommend this book to a variety of readers, not least family historians, to aid in their ... Read More:

. Agent Zigzag: The True Wartime Story of Eddie Chapman, Lover, Betrayer, Hero, Spy
by: Ben Macintyre
January 29, 2007
If you like adventure then you can't go far wrong with this book. During World War II, petty East End criminal Eddie Chapman finds himself banged up in occupied Jersey's prison. He is given a lifeline that he cannot refuse - come and work for German secret intelligence as a spy or face the consequences. Eddie opts for the former and is thrown into the grandiose world of a German spymaster. Now he is faced with the moral dilemma of double-crossing his country or the gamble of double crossing his new found boss. You'll have to read the book to find out which choice he makes ... I thoroughly recommend this book!

. The Napoleon of Crime: The Life and Times of Adam Worth, Master Thief
by: Ben Macintyre
1998-08
Just missed out on the 'oscar' this one. I loved the book, as I do enjoy the era in which it is set,etc . The subject is unbelieveable and this guy got up to things you couldn't make up! We should think ourselves lucky that Ben McIntyre came up with this, as for a exploits of Worth to have been lost to time would have been a travesty, and anybody that reads this will be enriched by it. Loses out a teeny tiny bit as it meanders a bit in the middle. Another reviewer had a go at the fact that it can lack detail here and there, but think about it - he was THE master criminal (probably of all time) and didn't record anything, etc and as he was never brought to justice for most of his deeds, we don't have the luxury of court transcripts and suchlike to fall back ...
