. Language, Truth and Logic (Penguin Modern Classics)
by: A.J. Ayer
April 26, 2001
I read Ayer's obituary in the Telegraph and he seemed like an interesting man, so I bought this book.
As a teenage layperson, I found it VERY heavy-going, I kept a dictionary nearby to refer to and my copy is littered with notes to myself on word meanings. It was worth the perseverance to discover so much. His debunking of inexact, ambiguous metaphysics really helped me to make the switch from being a wooley agnostic to a fully confirmed atheist.
Say what you like about positive optimism, it's Ayer's use and insistance of the importance of accuracy of meaning and expression in communication that I responded to.
This book modified my outlook on life and I have given away and bought the book 4 times now. ... Read More:

. X-Men: Complete Age Of Apocalypse Epic Book 4 TPB: Complete Age Of Apocalypse Epic Bk.4 (X-Men: The Complete Age of Apocalypse Epic)

November 29, 2006
Cut out the gum-ball superheroes and enter a world where a hero will kill you as quickly as a villain. This imagining of a world where Xavier died is one of the most powerful visions of the X-Universe out there. The grit and doomed nature of the Age of Apocalypse comes through in every story, but you also have characters you care about and want to see escape what you know will happen eventually.
Only four out of five stars because some of the art isn't amazing. Dont let that disuade you from an excellent story that showcases characters regular X-book readers will know and not know all at once.

. Beef and Liberty: Roast Beef, John Bull and the English Patriots
by: Ben Rogers
April 17, 2003
This is a tasty entry (or maybe I should say entree) in the "cultural history of food" genre. Mr. Rogers provides a brief history of the importance of beef, beer, bulldogs and John Bull in helping to forge an English national identity. Why, in particular, the above items? Good, hearty roast beef is used to differentiate the Englishman from the "foppish and effeminate" Frenchman, who can't be trusted because all of his food is hidden under a bunch of fancy sauces. Beer is a "honest," healthy drink- which won't lead to drunkeness and ruin- as opposed to, say, gin (brought over from Holland with William III) and fortified wines such as port. The bulldog exemplies the simplicity, directness, courage and tenacity of the "typical" Englishman, as does John ... Read More:
