.Managing for Dummies (For Dummies)

First, this book is a "fun" read which is unusual for most business books. If you want to know how mananagement thinks and how it works in most corporate environments today - get this book.

The first half is execellent and by the time it's completed you'll know exactly the way your poor boss has been tramautized over the past 10 years with all the new passing management fads. No wonder management is basically skeptical and seems to have a schizophrenic identity crisis.

The second half of the book hangs a bit, maybe the authors ran out of ideas. But the final Index of the 10 essential management books is invaluable. I've already read 3 of the suggestion.

A basic introduction to consulting. It is fresh and easy to read but has little depth and many of the chapters are common sense to business students. Its verbose style is time consuming if you are swotting up for consulting interviews.

I am always suspicious of books of lists. With my skepticism on full blast, this book immediately disarmed me by leading off with my own favorite advice about motivating people: Ask them what motivates them.

The book is then organized into sections that capture different kinds of ways to praise and recognize individuals. Taking the items that turn someone on, you can then cruise the lists until they trigger an idea that fits your situation. The book works well in that sense.

It's impossible for a book to tell you how to make things work in your workplace. This book is literally full of examples and motivational information. It's presented as lots of little stories and tips boxes. More than anything else the book encourages you to look at problems in a slightly different way, but if you were not already trying to, you probably wouldn't read the book!

It helps to make the next step of doing something about it, by lots of different ways that you can experiment with until you find one that works in your situation. In the UK we don't have such a idea-culture in the workplace as some of the American firms mentioned here do, but it also helps overcome that by suggesting other ways to get yourself heard.
