. Nepal (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Bradley Mayhew, Joe Bindloss
September 01, 2006
As me and a friend are planning a round the world trip this series of books has been a great help. In picking places where to go it's helpful to know whats there! Were mainly backpacking and using hostels so specific country guides aimed at this was essential. We needed to know campsites, country entry requirements, cost of living, activities, etiquette, transport options, do's and don'ts and most importantly what the food was like! As well as info on touring in campervans, car or footslogging. The book has it all and more. It covers all such topics and then reviews each place in the country individually. It has topics on law, car rental and purchase, gay and lesbians interests and so much more. If your travelling to this country ... Read More:

. Jordan (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Bradley Mayhew
April 01, 2006
A good country guide. Jordan is a small country which has many sights to see, the book is not very comprehensive and only provides details of sights in a brief format, which suits me as I don't like to be have every detail thrown at me.
As with all lonely Planet guides, this book is much more aimed at backpackers giving all the transport and budget details you'll need. I found a few details were significantly out of date and resulted in expensive taxi rides and some confused looks from the locals. Check the lonely planet website for updates.
If you are deciding whether to get the Rough Guide or the Lonely Planet (I used both for my trip) then you need to decide what you need to know. The rough Guide is very good at ... Read More:

. Middle East (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

I have recently returned from a trip using both the Lonely Planet to the Middle East and a separate country guide to Jordan. This particular compilation is sparse on cultural, historical and practical information (it is no more than 150 pages longer than the entire single country guide to Egypt), generally out of date (in particular, regarding prices and budgeting) and often misguiding (for example, several maps are marked with street names that are completely incorrect). If you are looking for a guide book to help plan a trip to the Middle East then you would be better off considering a different series, investigating the single country guides or not taking one at all.

. Central Asia (Lonely Planet Multi Country Guide)
by: Bradley Mayhew
August 01, 2007
This was the most up-to-date (and indeed, pretty much the only) guidebook to the region that I could find. It's got all of the standard Lonely Planet features, and it is easy to find things and has a good balance of descriptive and factual information.
However, I found some of the opinions in it incomprehensible and would warn any reader to take them with a pinch of salt. One hotel described as being awful with tiny rooms turned out to be fantastic and one of the best places we stayed in. Likewise some of the sights are talked down inexplicably. There are also very few photographs.
In terms of size, it's certainly not as heavy as most multi-country guides, but is still far from pocket size. I managed to carry it ... Read More:

. Morocco (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)
by: Geoff Crowther, Bradley Mayhew, Jan Dodd
February 28, 2003
The LP guide has proven to be more thoroughly insightful than the Rough Guide although as Mark from Manchester states provides less information on the historical nd anthropoligical details. One major criticism of this guide however is that it can be extremely well covered with respect to accommodation in one two (Essouira) and then have barely enough on another; also the price guide offered by the guide actually implies indirecely that the accommodation will be in this price range where in fact the cheaper accomodation is much cheaper than that advertised. Some of the writing can be so close to stereotypical or cliched expression e.g. "Just the name Morocco evokes..." can be at best humerous and at worst off putting and misleading. I do prefer the ... . China (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Damian Harper, Stephen Fallon, Katja Gaskell, Julie Grundvig, Carolyn Heller, Thomas Huhti, Bradley Mayhew, Christopher Pitts, Lonely Planet Publications Ltd

I normally swear by Lonely Planet guidebooks and didn't think twice about buying the China guide. However, I found that some of the practical information (which is normally so reliable in Lonely Planet guides) was thin on the ground as well as sometimes misleading (there was a subway stop on the Beijing map which didn't exist and some of the phone numbers for hostels in Xi'an were incorrect). What disappointed me the most however was that a lot of the sights descriptions /background info have clearly been copied from signs displaying onsite. I found that I had to take a tour guide on several occasions to get a less superficial overview of the place I was visiting. A big disappointment then although basic info is covered and will allow you to get from A ... Read More:
