A very well written book and guide to France. It has great advice on eating out. banking, driving and even buying or renting a home. Plus all the hot spots and nice places to visit off the main track.

I'm in the process of planning a trip to the Languedoc and I've been reading several guides to the region. This is not a terrible guide, but it's the one I liked the least.

This book would be good if you already know exactly where you want to go and what you want to do. For example, there is plenty of specific information on things like opening hours and places to stay. It's very well researched. But if you're earlier in the planning stages than that, it doesn't really do it. The chapters leap about from place to place and it gets confusing trying to work out where they are in relation to one another. Moreover, nowhere sounds particularly enticing! (Apart from Montpellier: clearly a favorite of the author). Several towns that are ... Read More:

I'm a big fan of the Rough Guides for cities and own a few, including the one for Paris, and have found them to be excellent containing every bit of information I could possibly need.

This guide tries to squeeze the whole of France into a book the size of a city guide, which means it only has space to describe briefly a few major towns in each province.

For backpackers this may be adequate information, but is of limited use to someone trying to plan day trips. Maybe a guide to each of the provinces would have been better.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Rough Guide to Barcelona (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

I foind this Rough Guide and very informative just like the previous guide books I have used in the past. It has the top 20 places to visit and it is clearly laid out.
The information about the places I visited was very informative
and helpful. I attempted to speak in Spanish and I found the phrases and words useful when trying to order food or ask directions.
I enjoyed reading the history of the area, Catalan and I would recommend the book to friends.
Although the book was published 2 years ago some of the information was not correct but that should not be a problem.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Languedoc and Roussillon Rough Guide (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
.Languedoc and Roussillon Rough Guide (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

This is easily the most feeble of all the many Rough Guides I have used while abroad. If the author did all the research and writing on his own, than that's a mistake which shows. He's clearly uninterested in art (viz. cursory descriptions of Musee Fabre in Montpellier and Musee Goya at Castres), so someone who is interested should have been employed to help him out.

There are glaring omissions - the rural area around the Herault Valley is fascinating and offers lots of walking possibilities, and there should have been clear advice on where the best beaches are on the Languedoc Coast in the Montpellier-Narbonne-Beziers sector; Catlos more or less dismisses this whole littoral, which is wrong, as there are a few nice, uncrowded places ...
