I have read several books about the first world war including those with interviews of people who fought in France and this novel stands out in its portrayal of real people and real events. I was captivated by the way, through the use of letters and journals, that it paints a picture about what it was like for one family as four brothers served in France. The book looks beyond the British 'stiff upper lip' and reveals how the war took its toil on the mother and father both emotionally paralysed by their losses. I recommend this as a captivating and educational read.

Another enjoyable book from the Caper Court series by Caro Fraser. This one is the third in the series, after 'The Pupil' and 'Judicial Whispers'. We catch up with characters we already know - Anthony - who has a relationship with Sarah, unaware that she has a rather murky past with Leo! Luckily he realises she's not for him and ends it, and meets a much nicer girl who was right there all along. Leo - Leo's marriage to Rachel is crumbling, but now they have a baby boy together, so he waits for her to make a move to end it, rather than do it himself, as he's fond of his son. Another really good read, the second in the Caper Court series by Caro Fraser. It was nice to get to know Anthony and Leo a bit more, and what a complex character Leo is! We also meet Rachel Dean, a beautiful solicitor who Anthony falls in love with, but he loses her to Leo. I'm still wondering if anything will happen between Leo and Anthony in the future. I think it has to, but when? Now onto the third book in the series - 'An Immoral Code. I can't wait!

Another very enjoyable read from the Caper Court series by Caro Fraser, 'A
Hallowed Place'. This is the fourth book in the series and we continue to get to know the characters better - Anthony, who is now in a fairly serious relationship with Camilla, but can he resist the temptation of fun with ex-girlfriend Sarah, who is now a pupil at Caper Court, whilst Camilla is working away? Felicity is still in her car crash of a relationship with Vince, and all the while Henry is there, loving her from afar. We witness the fall-out from Leo and Rachel's marriage. This book is part of a series, but despite that it is clearly written with just the right amount of explanation about the characters who have appeared before. I also liked the author's style - she is not afraid to use words of more than two syllables. However, there is far too much about the personal lives of the characters, jumping from one group to another instead of an interwoven plot. The most interesting part of the book concerns the professional life of the protagonist, and this is skilfully interwoven with his personal life; if all of the book had been up to this standard it would have been a better book than it actually is. I really enjoyed this, my first Caro Fraser book. I immediately liked Anthony, and felt for him when he was struggling with his finances, and had problems with his love-life. Julia didn't deserve him AT ALL, and I'm glad he woke up to what sort of person she was. Hopefully she's now in a relationship with horrible Piers! I don't think she intended to be a bad person, she's just an awful snob, rather up herself, but secretly I think she's insecure and relies on the adoration of others to feel good about herself. I *loved* it when Leo told her what he thought of her! (Now I'm worried that I have a nasty streak!!) Anthony and Leo hit it off so well that I can't help hoping they get together, if that's what they both want. I'm glad that Anthony's finances took a ... Read More:

Where Caro Fraser's other legal novels are set at the Bar this is set in a solicitor's practice. Few of its characters are attractive and one feels they mostly desrve their fate. Nonetheless, the story is well told and a very enjoyable read.

What a disappointment! I have been told such wonderful things about these books but felt wholeheartedly disappointed with its trite plot and characters I couldn't care for. I found myself strugggling through the overlong plot, hoping that at some point I would be proved wrong!

I felt no sympathy for the characters, even though it felt that it was expected of the reader. Far from feeling sorry for them in their state of emotional immaturity, they seemed foolish. As the book forms part of a series I expect that readers will be able to witness the development of these characters, however, there was not enough in this particular book which made me want to come back for more.
