City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Scribes from Alexandria: Roman Mystery 15 (The Roman Mysteries)
.The Scribes from Alexandria: Roman Mystery 15 (The Roman Mysteries)

by: Caroline Lawrence

June 26, 2008
Puzzling riddles, clever anagrams, and hidden meanings in names make this one of Caroline Lawrence's most fun-filled additions to her popular Roman Mysteries series!

As with all her books in the series, The Scribes from Alexandria offers us a glimpse into the ancient world -- this time finding our dauntless detectrix, Flavia Gemina, traveling through Egypt, hot on the trail of a runaway scribe from the famous Library of Alexandria.

Caroline Lawrence even provides an accompanying, illustrated "Latin Alphabet in Hieroglyphs" so that you can try your hand at being a scribe by writing your own name in ancient Egyptian style.

This book is another triumph for Caroline Lawrence -- and another joy for her ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Secrets of Vesuvius: Roman Mysteries 2 (The Roman Mysteries)
.The Secrets of Vesuvius: Roman Mysteries 2 (The Roman Mysteries)

by: Caroline Lawrence

July 01, 2002
After reading The Thieves of Ostia, I thought The Secrets of Vesuvius was amazing. It was AD79. Flavia and her friends Jonathan, Nubia and Lupus go to stay with Uncle Giaus near Pompeii in August. BIG MISTAKE! Vesuvius is about to erupt and everyone is in MORTAL DANGER!*!*! Join them on a breathtaking adventure. I would recommend the Secrets of Vesuvius for readers aged 8 or older.

.The Beggar of Volubilis: Roman Mystery 14 (The Roman Mysteries)

by: Caroline Lawrence

This, it must be said, is an amazing book.

I love the way that, floppy, falls in love with a girl loads younger than himself!!!

In this 14th book, Flavia and friends travel to Africa, Nubia's home land. Well... They have the task of stealing a valuable jewel for Titus; but not everything goes to plan!!! Mean Lupus the Actor!!! The only thing that I could possible critisise, is J's part, and Flavia's father!!!!

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Thieves of Ostia
.The Thieves of Ostia

by: Caroline Lawrence

I came upon the Roman Mystery series by chance and since I enjoy novels set in Roman times I investigated a bit further, and after visiting Caroline Lawrence's web site I decided to read the series (now up to 17 books). I enjoy historical novels about Rome and have read several, including those of Robert Harris, but I have not read any mystery books before. The Roman Mysteries is intended for children (ages around 9 - 12) but I think that adult readers will enjoy them just as much because they are skillfully written and present Roman daily life in an interesting and very down-to-earth way. I liked the details that Ms. Lawrence included such as colors, which provide a little extra detail that bring her scenes to life. Just to name one item of accuracy, ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Charioteer of Delphi: Roman Mysteries 12 (The Roman Mysteries)
.The Charioteer of Delphi: Roman Mysteries 12 (The Roman Mysteries)

by: Caroline Lawrence

April 02, 2007
I read this book because I have read all the preceeding books in the series. The Charioteer of Delphi is a wonderful book but possibly not the best place to start in the series as it is the thirteenth book. I enjoyed the Charioteer of Delphi immensely and new complex characters were introduced. This is one of Caroline Lawrence 's best written books, I like the way she doesn't patronise children by writing about children who are always perfect. It inspired me to read more about ancient Rome and Aristo's scroll at the back is very helpful.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Pirates of Pompeii: Roman Mysteries 3 (The Roman Mysteries)
.The Pirates of Pompeii: Roman Mysteries 3 (The Roman Mysteries)

by: Caroline Lawrence

No matter which way you look at it, this book, like all of Lawrence's Roman mysteries, is flawless. Impeccably researched,it's child-friendly while remaining true to the brutalities of life in Ancient Rome, and the characters are so life-like characterisations that my sons and I often remark, 'Oh, Lupus would like that,' or 'That's just the sort of thing Jonathan would say!' The books are also often very funny and have us in stitches. But perhaps the best thing about them is the beautiful, understated writing. With a few simple words this writer can effortlessly evoke a scene. And, as with all the best children's writers, she puts a lot of delicious food into her stories. If you want your children to understand the after-effects of the tsunami, read them ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Sirens of Surrentum: Roman Mysteries 11 (The Roman Mysteries)
.The Sirens of Surrentum: Roman Mysteries 11 (The Roman Mysteries)

by: Caroline Lawrence

September 07, 2006
When it comes to accurate historical detail and convincing depiction of ancient Roman society, author Caroline Lawrence knows whereof she writes. Before becoming a children's book author, Caroline Lawrence was a student of Classics at Berkeley and later at Cambridge, as well as a teacher of Latin at a small London primary school.

I am a librarian by profession and have read all of the books in Caroline Lawrence's Roman Mysteries series. The Sirens of Surrentum is one of her best. The protagonist of the story, Flavia Gemina, is about to celebrate her 11th birthday and is just one year away from being of marriageable age (!) by ancient Roman custom. Readers around the same age as Flavia (perhaps age 10 and older being the best age level for the ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Slave-girl from Jerusalem: Roman Mysteries 13 (The Roman Mysteries)
.The Slave-girl from Jerusalem: Roman Mysteries 13 (The Roman Mysteries)

by: Caroline Lawrence

August 02, 2007
Wow! After hearing that Caroline Lawrence had churned out yet another book, I snapped it up, rushing at the start of the book as I heard rumours of marriage proposals in The Beggar of Volubilis. Now, I wish I hadn't rushed! Jonathan's heavily pregnant sister Miriam arrives at Flavia's house with a mystery for them. Someone is accusing her friend Hephzibah of faking her freedom after her master dies. Later on in the book, Hepzhibah is accused of a few counts of murder by the same man. Pliny the Second arrives to defend Hephzibah, but when he brings bad news to Flavia that he can't make it to the hearing, Flavia calls upon Gaius Valerus Flaccus, AKA Floppy. You know, from the Colossus of Rhodes? The relationship between the two is VERY interesting and it is worth ... Read More:
