. Malta and Gozo (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Carolyn Bain
April 01, 2007
I wonder where LP will set its own limit on the destinations they cover. Being excellent and nr.1 in guidebooks of unexplored, less known or not well organized places, they also have written books about places like Malta (and The Canary Islands) where one can go easy on your own without a guidebook like this one.
About Malta there are numerous guidebooks with detailled descriptions of the places, and that is what people ever need to visit Malta. Most people will be there in some sort of package tour already anyway. Once there the locals speak english and the island is so well organized you do not need a LP to find out what to do, how to get around etc. The tourist office is also extremely well providing brochures, maps of everything you ... . Tasmania (Lonely Planet Regional Guides)
by: Carolyn Bain, Gina Tsarouhas
October 01, 2005
The Lonely Planet city guide to "Tasmania" is a very useful travel guide authored by Carolyn Bain, Gina Tsarouhas, and Paul Smitz. With 19 national parks which cover over a third of the territory, it will come as no surprise that a good portion of this guide is focused on outdoor activities. However, if you are headed to Tasmania for other reasons, as I am, there is still plenty of good information about sites to see, places to go, things to do, and places to eat. This review is based on the 4th edition of this particular travel guide, which was published in October of 2005.
The book opens with several sections about the state as a whole. There are sections on the history, culture, environment, the outdoors, national parks, and food ... Read More:

. Australia (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Susie Ashworth, Carolyn Bain, Neal Bedford

This book is the de-facto book.
I travelled Oz and Tas on it, as do most other travellers.
If you want a guide book, go get one, this will tell you everything in a concise way - as this is what a traveller needs.
There are many other books out there, rough guides etc, but trust me everyone who is anyone uses lonly planet. They are far from perfect, but it has everything u need in it, prices, phone numbers, how to get around, itineries etc. For the reviwer who said it doesnt have iteneries, did most definatly does - near beginning. but you do have to cross reference each point to other points in the book, there isnt space to repeat stuff!!
You would do well getting this book way before travelling, and planning ... Read More:

. New Zealand (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Tony Wheeler
September 30, 2002
I bought this for a trip round the whole of New Zealand and was amazed to find the level of detail within the book. I actually travelled with both this and the Footprint guide (which certainly contains more info, although probably more on where to stay). I would have to say Lonely Planet wins hands down on New Zealand in terms of quality, readability and interest. The standard Lonely Planet structure is adopted, providing the reader with a history, general information on the country for the visitor, suggestions for activities and itineries, a vast amount of info on sights to see and lots of useful maps. The sights info is broken up into region and neatly follows a trip going from the north to the south. The index makes it easy to find ... Read More:

. Corfu and the Ionians (Lonely Planet Regional Guides)
by: Sally Webb, Carolyn Bain
February 01, 2002
Having just spent a week in Corfu, I found this book inaccurate, out-of-date, and even worse, downright snobbish. For example, the restaurant reviews for Corfu town were badly researched and we found it payed to follow your instinct and explore the old town for hidden restaurants. Its description of entire the east coast as 'not worth visiting' was entirely unfair, as you are ideally placed to roam the entire island. Take my advice, no matter where you stay you can always hire a bike or car and move about, it's a very small island!

. Sweden (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)
by: Graeme Cornwallis
April 01, 2003
Finally Sweden has been included in the Lonely Planet family of travelling books. Not the cheapest country or the first you think of when someone says back-packing. This is the first edition and it is easy to tell with numerous spelling misstakes and missing facts. Sure Sweden is quite expensive, but why recommend McDonalds in every city, there are other inexpensive and really good restaurants in this country. A brief chapter covers walking and hiking in Sweden, but there are so much more than that to be said about the subject. So who should buy this guide? It is good when it comes to covering travelling within Sweden between small cities and some of the top attractions, but lacks depth.
