Christopher's latest is a beautiful book to paw over and dip in and out of. The pictures are evocative and inspiring, and the text just takes you there.

Great to keep in your car so that you always have something interesting to deviate off to when your on a journey. The format reminds me of a more lavish version of the old AA or RAC map/guide books that your Dad used to keep in the glove box and I loved to read as a boy.

I've always had a great love of our fantastic British Coastline. It has always been my ambition to carry out the complete tour. Perhaps one day I will achieve the ambition! For the meantime I will have to make do with the books and the DVD's! I notice that the first book "coast" received some criticism by the reviewers here on Amazon so I was keen to check out if the 'grumbles' applied to the 2nd volume "The Journey Continues". As far as I'm concerned I have no complaints at all...this is a wonderful book. It contains 16 area tours in all starting from the south coast working in a clockwise fashion from Dover ending up and finishing in London. Like many others, I bought the book because I had thoroughly enjoyed the TV programme. The TV programme covered areas of the coastline which I have enjoyed visting - but they were missing from the book! The pictures, though sometimes excellent photographs, were nowhere near as good as the TV images. The worst aspect for me, however, was the way in which the text (fairly uninspired when compared with the TV commentary) was printed in a sans-serif font over a grey background showing a map of the British coast. It is therefore very difficult to read, and, as pointed out above, not really worth the effort. Why could the BBC not have produced a book in the same league as the one accompanying the British Isles - natural history. A missed opportunity!

This book is a life saver if you live in London - just take the car to the places Somerville recommends and get out and walk! But if you are as bad a map reader as me it helps to have the Ordnance Survey map with you. I have four children who get very little experience of the country. When we go on one of these walks they call it " going on an adventure" - that is how a simple walk through fields seems to London children.
