. Lady Chatterley's Lover (Wordsworth Classics)
by: D.H. Lawrence
August 01, 2005
A book which has achieved more notoriety for its sex scenes (shocking in 1930, when the book was written) than for its character studies, Lady Chatterley's Lover focuses on the affair between Constance, the "sturdy" young wife of Clifford Chatterley, and the gamekeeper of the Chatterleys' estate in the remote midlands. Constance, who married Clifford a month before he left for World War I, has become his caretaker since his return from the war, paralyzed from the waist down and impotent. A writer who surrounds himself with intellectual friends, Clifford regards Connie as his hostess and caregiver and does not understand her abject yearning for some life of her own.

. Women in Love (Penguin Popular Classics)
by: D.H. Lawrence
March 28, 1996
Let us not be misled: this book isn't about Women, and certainly isn't about being in Love. This begs the question, of course, "What is WOMEN IN LOVE about?"
"Women in Love" is more complex and intense, than your average novel: it is, arguably, a difficult book, and yet a very rewarding read... The satisfaction of having bent your consciousness into the mental gymnastics of Lawrence's intricate imagery or having somehow, somewhat come close to probing the depths of Birkin's entirely abstract reflections, will be greater than any scruples regarding the length, plot (or lack thereof)that may discourage some readers.
Lawrence delves into the abyss of mankind trying to shake loose the old ideals, to find a new expression, a new style ... Read More:

Endlessly repetitive with no concept of plot development. I too remember having this foisted on me for A Levels and vowed never to touch it again. Until that is, it came up on my Amazon "tailored" list of recommendations. Then the old red mist descended and I felt I had to do something to balance out the ridiculously hagiographic reviews accompanying this ragbag of a text and save countless souls from the purgatory of having to endure Lawrence's endless ramblings about tortured souls who cant make their minds up as to whose knickers they want to get their grubby little paws in.

. The Rainbow (Wordsworth Classics)
by: D.H. Lawrence
May 01, 1995
More passionate that Women in Love, much deeper than Lady Chatterley, I think this is Lawrence's most successful novel. While ostensibly chronicling the moves from an agricultural to industrialised society, he plumbs the emotional depths of his characters. Frequently viewed as old-fashioned, Lawrence captures all the quivering, trembling, tentative life inside his characters and somehow paints it on the page. I first read this when I was seventeen just before going to university to read English and it left me blown away. I've since avaoided re-reading in case I'm disappointed, but have finally succumbed - and no, I'm not! Not a tube read as you need to concentrate and allow yourself to be sucked into its emotional depths but it's well worth it.

. Women in Love (Penguin Classics)

I seriously loved this book! It wasn't the typical romance novel i assumed it to be when i first piked it up. I don't at all agree with my fellow reviewer that it was at times sexist! The women in it were completely independent making their own decisions and moulding their own careers although writing this i do see that they were portrayed as more scheming an in worse light than the men.
It is a great reflection of the time it was written and shocking for a modern reader to see how far socially since ww1 we've moved on in terms of openness about sex and sexuality as well as the relevance of the traditional home and family, i also feel many of the questions brought up in the novel are as relevant today as they were when it was written.
It's a book well ... Read More:
