. Italy (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps. We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see ... Read More:

. Spain (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
by: Damien Simonis, Susan Forsyth, John Noble

The Lonely Planet guidebooks are deservedly the default choice for many travellers. This lastest edition (2007) of the Lonely Planet guide to Spain goes a long way to answering those critics who say that European countries have sometimes been Lonely Planet's Achille's heel. This is an excellent guidebook to Spain, both for those who just want to visit the well-known highlights as well as for those who enjoy getting off the beaten track. The language is informal, perhaps a reflection of the publisher's target audience and the overall feel is unstuffy.
The book is organised into regional chapters, with Madrid and Barcelona being given their own. The first hundred pages or so are dedicated to themes such as history, culture architecture, ... Read More:

. Barcelona (Lonely Planet City Guides)
by: Damien Simonis
October 01, 2006
After the low point of my relationship with Lonely Planet (Montréal and Québec City), I was pleased to have my faith restored in the imprint with this excellent guide.
As you'd expect, author Damien Simonis sings the city's praises, but it's never over the top and, let's face it, how many cities can you name that can beat Barcelona? (Of the three I can think of, two are Spanish.) This is a well-measured talking up of a city that needs no talking up.
A number of elements make Barcelona for me: accessibility of live music, art, food and language.
Taking the last first, this is the only place I found Simonis indecisive, and I have to admit I'm still confused myself, but generally speaking I get away with my self-taught ... Read More:

. Florence (Lonely Planet City Guides)
by: Damien Simonis
March 01, 2006
After recently arriving home from a fantastic trip to Florence (Siena and Pisa), I must say how positively useful my husband and I found this guide. It gave us up to date information on the best locations to visit (away from the tourist trail), information on the best times to visit important places of interest (with helpful hints) and, most important of all, where to dine. We didn't have a bad meal! We also found the walks listed, very useful. All in all, this was a fantstic guide and well worth the money! Thanks Lonely Planet!!

. Venice and the Veneto (Lonely Planet City Guides)
by: Damien Simonis
February 01, 2008
I usually travel with LP so maybe I am a little biased but I did find this book up to their normally high standards.
The legendary confusion of Venice's allyways meant I was wary of this book's maps (esp considering LP's less than perfect record in that regard). However I was pleasantly surprised and in 4 days in the city did not get lost using them. It was a little annoying the way they were split across several pages but i guess that was necessary to acheive the accuracy.
The tips to the sights and the walking tours were exellent. The restaurant and shopping sections were ok. I cant comment on the hotels section as I was in an apartment.
The prices (on everything) and some of the transport details were out-of-date.
Overall ... Read More:

. Barcelona (Lonely Planet Encounter)
by: Damien Simonis
May 01, 2007
I have borrowed just about every well-known guide book on Barcelona from my library in preparation for my first visit to the city, and have got more use from this little book than all the others combined! The layout and contents are very user-friendly and tells you very useful stuff. I'd recommmend it for anyone who, like me, wanted an introduction to the city, and pointers on where to visit for a short break. I'll definitely be looking out for this range for future trips to other cities.
