The guide book is useful, interesting and really helps you make the most of your time in Cambodia. I wouldn't have seen half of the amazing places if I hadn't taken it with me. The information in it is accurate despite what the local taxi drivers may say!! Stand your ground!! There is no need to buy any extra guide books when you're there either - all of their information is included in this one.
The only thing the book doesn't prepare you for is the random overpricing that has occurred, the variation from shop to shop is immense. Shop where the locals shop and you'll save a fortune.

Always been a very big fan of Lonely Planet guides... they have helped me round India, Nepal, Pakistan, France, Italy and Ireland. As my old copy is pre-Euro I thought I'd get a new up to date copy. Wish I hadn't. I've been looking at the Paris section... we are taking our children and I was interested in Parc d'Asterix... no mention. Several pages on Disney. Lots of other destinations on our 'tick list' are missing.

Nice photography as ever, and the usual clear concise style. I realise they cna't put everything in the guide but these are major omissions. Not recommended. Sorry Lonely Planet!

.Vietnam (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

Anyone heading to Vietnam should consider buying this book- lonely planet always do the job when it comes to providing basic information. However, I found that while I used the maps non-stop and found the sections on local and national history interesting and informative, I only used the sections on food, accommodation and excursions as indicators of average prices. Sadly, the places in the book were often overrun (and therefore overpriced) as a consequence of inclusion, and better deals could ususlly be found independantly. Another problem with the book is that I found much of the information to be out of date- Vietnam is a country in transition to the extent that it would be difficult for any guidebook to keep up with it.

This was an excellent book by the coach of the Oxford squad in the 1980s Daniel Topolski, they do say truth is strager than fiction, and this book shows its alot more interesting also.
Its a very English moral tale: 'winning is best done by being part of a team and the quest for self glory is not a noble one'. It also quite nicely lays bare the bullying tactics and power play that the Americans are so adept at, fortunately they don't get to be the winners in this story.

.True Blue: The Oxford Boat Race Mutiny

It is not easy to explain to anyone what the big attraction of rowing is, and this book mostly succeeds (see also The Amateurs). The author's (or at least Topolski's) passion for the big race is communicated well, and the book is full of entertaining anecdotes about previous Boat Race legends.

However, given that this claims to be a true story, the characters have an unsatisfying comic-book feel about them, and are barely recognisable from their real-life equivalents. The action is full of noticeable omissions in the interest of a nice straightforward story. There are heroic goodies and dastardly baddies, and the simmering anti-Americanism that is never far beneath the surface of much English journalism shines through.
