Written in a sloppy and thoughtless style. E.g. On page 5 the learner is introduced to two sentences: 'Seals love to play' and 'Bats are mammals.'
This is redolent of the infamous nineteenth-century travellers' guide which offered 'My postillion has been struck by lightning' as a useful phrase to memorise.
It is also full of careless mistakes e.g. on page 8 we are taught that 'a sinistra' means 'on the right.'
Pulp it!

This is a compact, thorough book with plenty of reading material from a variety of styles, including contemporary writing, poetry, prose, newspapers, etc. Each chapter introduces the piece of reading and sets it in context, then there is a comprehension section, some grammatical and vocabulary-building exercises and help with idiomatic expressions. I would recomend this book to people having studied Italian up to A-level or who have lived in Italy a while, as the grammar can be a bit tricky. The only frustrating thing, is that not all the sections within each chapter are answered in the answer-section at the back of the book.

Come un principiante in Italiano, this book is an extremely useful reference containing around 2000 words and expressions including an index of common English idioms as well as an index in Italian. I'm just beginning to read Italian without a translation, so my copy gets lots of use. In my opinion, the authors have done a fantastic job. Two thumbs up as well for the clear plastic cover and the nice small size.

First, the bad bits. While clearly intended to be sold in the UK, this book has been written for the American audience - rather than an English-speaking audience. No thought has been given to provide UK-equivalents of what we would perceive as Americanisms (e.g. bangs, braids, windshield and IRA - which, in the US, is something to do with pensions).

There's no help for pronunciation where the stress does not fall on the penultimate syllable of the word.

Now the good bits, which form the majority.
