. Homicide:
by: David Simon
September 04, 2008
How do you fill the void left after watching the final episode of one of the greatest tv shows of all time ? Go back to the source and that's what this is without this book there is no The Wire. It's a remarkable book and one that hasn't really dated unlike the TV series of the same name.
The premise is well described David Simon writes about a year in the life of the homicide department of Baltimore what suprised me was that it isn't written for the journalist point of view so instead we get informed what the detectives are thinking. It's hard to explain that for the veteran detectives we see that there is no personal crusade to solve the crimes it's a job and not a highly paid one so if it's not the money what compels these individuals ... . Shantaram
by: Gregory David Roberts
March 24, 2005
I was appalled by this book on several levels: the abysmal writing, the complete lack of editorial judgement (it could have been cut by at least 50%), the author's vastly inflated opinion of himself and his views on life, but most of all by the awful glorification of crime. For those who have submitted rave reviews of this book did they forget the fact that this man was convicted af armed robbery and sentenced to 19 years in prison? Despite his claims that he is "born again" in India and becomes a "Man of Peace" (the meaning of Shantaram) he goes on to join the Bombay Mafia, becoming involved in drug smuggling and passport forgery!! And yet his experiences are held up as examples of "what the human spirit can endure." Mr Roberts tells us on his ... Read More:

. "Have You Seen...?": a Personal Introduction to 1,000 Films Including Masterpieces, Oddities and Guilty Pleasures (with Just a Few Disasters)
by: David Thomson
September 25, 2008
"Early on as I watched films and tried to read about them, I found that I valued broad comments on the medium...more than intense and reverend scrutiny of particular films composed by critics who treated a Nicholas Ray film as if it might have been a sculpture by Bernini, or Hamlet."
How odd that in the month that Sight and Sound (in its Who Needs Critics issue) includes this comment from David Thomson, his new book is published, a book that consists of "a personal introduction to 1,000 films" or in other words a not quite reverend but certainly intense scrutiny of particular films.
Having made that snidey point, what does the book do and who is it for? Well, each of Thomson's chosen films has one page to itself and approximately ... Read More:

. Tyrannosaurus Drip
by: Julia Donaldson
July 04, 2008
I love Julia Donaldson's books because they entertain the adult as well as the child. They hold us spellbound on the settee as we revel in the rhymes and sway with the rhythms. My five year old boy loves Tyrannosauruses and my 4 year old girl likes the families of dinosaurs and the tiny egg-carrying Compognathus. Even when I'm tired, I feel better after reading one of JD's masterpieces aloud, and the little ones go to bed content because there's always a happy ending.

. Management: An Introduction
by: David Boddy
December 10, 2007
Search Engine Optimisation has acquired a status which might be regarded similar to that of the magic circle:
It's secretive - only those in the circle really know the tricks
There's an element of magic - SEOs do things we don't understand
It's competitive - we all want to get to the top
It's closed - those within the circle do not disclose all the tricks
They even categorise their tricks as good and bad with the terms "white hat" and "black hat"
Well, in this excellent new book David Viney has let us all into the circle, and what we learn is that it's not magic!
However, I should like to follow that statement by immediately saying that it is plainly not easy either. Also, by the very nature of the fierce competition ... Read More:
