.Madeira Bus and Touring Map

This is a useful map. Two sided, one side is a streetmap of Funchal, size 40cm x 60cm, with all districts and the major roads named. It marks all the town bus routes and their terminuses. There is also a table showing details of their routes, and notes about bus services, etiquette, frequency... It would not be a substitute for a tourists plan of the very centre of Funchal, (though you can pick these up free everywhere).
The other side is a map of the island, 50cm x 80cm, scale 1:60,000, 5cm=3km, showing roads, contours, tourist information, a place-name index, plus details of the across-island bus routes, with timetable information for some routes. This is a good, useful map. Two sided, each 55cm x 65cm, scale 1:40,000, 2.5cm =1km, which is about 1.5inches = 1 mile. Not quite as good as a British Ordnance Survey map, but better and cheaper (from Amazon) than any maps I saw in Madeira. All the main roads, tourist info, contours, (with good background colouring to indicate height,essential in such a mountainous region), footpath details, with references to walk numbers in guide-books, levadas, a place-name index... There is also a small street-map of the centre of Funchal, but it's really too small to be of use. Collect a free advertising tourist map from your hotel for the centre of Funchal. .GPS the Easy Way (2nd Edition)

I bought this used and in new condition for a mere 1.68pounds so i shouldnt complain. Its written by an enthusiast who gained a lot of his experience Hiking in Tenerife where i happen to live so that was a bonus. Theres a lot of "microsoft word 2000" cliparts making it look very basic but the author makes a good effort in explaining things from a simple view and gives exercises in the UK which is a great way to learn. The book was quite short compared to "GPS for dummies" which i managed to flick through but that was very USA based and not really for europe.

.Mallorca North and Mountains Tour and Trail Super-Durable Map (Discovery Walking Guides)

I took this map on a 5 day walking holiday around Mallorca and found that after the first day the waxy layer of the map actually came off. Mallorca is a great place for walking, but it is not the friendliest environment. What I mean by that is that there are rocky paths, scrambling, very scratchy bushes and heat. The map does not well if in contact with sweat, the surface is just coming off. The folds aswell started to disintegrate after 5 days.
The content of the map itself did not seem to have all the tracks and paths on it. If you are a hillwalker like myself, and if you expect something like a Ordance Survey Map , this is definitely not the map for you. I bought this from amazon.co.uk and used it on a recent holiday to Madeira. We tried out three walks, not covered in any other books we've read and really enjoyed them.

Shirley's directions and descriptions of the walks are great and took us to some places we would not have otherwise discovered. She also goes into interesting detail about the local plant life, history and places of interest. An excellent guide, which we'll be using again on our next trip.

.Walk! Menorca

Three weeks in Sept/Oct gave us plenty of time to benefit from the routes in Walk Menorca. Everything worked just as described except the Forts Ancient & Modern where the military have evicted the hippies and re-occupied the Lluc al Lari fort; unfortunately.
We particularly like the routes linking the resorts and the North coast region. Such beautiful contryside but when the book says it is tough as on the route to Es Grau it really does mean it and without the book you would be unlikely to reach this delightful little settlement. We also bought the Tour & Trail Map which was equally brilliant.
Thinking a Menorca author would be more up to date we bought a local booklet - it was useless, not one route worked, some decidedly dangerous ... Read More:

Having recently moved to the Island and both being keen walkers, we searched in vain for a good walking book. Our wishes have been answered by this book, a revelation! We tried walk 27. Whitwell, Week Down and the Undercliff, what a cracking route, easy parking, good pub, all round excellent. If the rest of the walks are half as good as this we are on to a winner. Next walk 'The Long Stone'! Well done Martin Simons.

I had walked the Tramuntana with Charles Davis book Walk Mallorca North & Mountains, but this time we were based in the west so I picked up Walk Mallorca West. It was a real surprise to find so many 5 rated routes in what I though was a gentle region of the island. Even the family enjoyed some of the easier routes including two different routes to Sa Trappa. Great value, up to date, accurate and inspirational; gets my vote.

I like the clear easy to read mapping which manages to be highly detailed without seeming over complicated. We covered quite a lot of ground in two weeks and found walks we would not have discovered without this map which inspired confidence. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the island who wants to get away from the tourists and into the real Tenerife.
