This is such an inspiring book. The author's enthusiasm is infectious and his route descriptions are clear; we did lots of the routes and didn't want to come home. Can't wait for our next visit to get into the rest of them.

There are plenty of routes of varying lengths and difficulties so whatever kind of walker you are there will be plenty to suit you. Mallorca is a truly beautiful island and should be on the list for everyone who likes walking.

I have a shelf full of Lake District books but so many of them seem to have the same old routes, desribed in uninspiring terms, that I don't feel the urge to use them.

Walk! The Lake District South is fresh, and although it covers some old favourites, there are plenty of new ideas for routes.I love the style of the author - he informs yet entertains at the same time. You just want to get out there! I have done 3 routes so far and intend to do the lot.

The maps are adapted from OS so are good and clear, overlaid with GPS tracks and waypoints - most reassuring.

I would heartily recommend this book to all lovers of the Lake District.

.Walk the Alpujarras

Just back from a 9-day trek in the Alpujarras guided largely by this book and accompanying map. Cannot compare with any other guide books, but we had little trouble following any of the several walks we tried from this book, and some of the potentially tricky navigational moments were aided greatly by CD's descriptions and guidance, as well as enlivened by his occasional wry comments. Basically, if you can read and see where you are going, and have a modicum of sense of the terrain, this book should be all you need.

Criticisms (minor gripes really) are that the book - and the map - does not show all trails available, and notably omits the Sendero Sulayr (which is a fairly recently devised higher-level circuit around the Sierra Nevadas), ... Read More:

La Palma is a walker's paradise and we've been going there off an on for several years. Trouble was, it's so little known that there was no decent walking guidebook to the island. We were pleased therefore to find this book in the excellent Discover Walking Guides series, which we've also used in Mallorca and Andalusia. The Mallorcan and Andalusian books are by the same author, so we knew the guide would be good, but we didn't expect to find quite so many walks we had never heard of before. An excellent introduction to the island, but worth buying even for people already familiar with the place.

I just back from la gomera. Beautiful place although the main town San Sebastian cannot be called a beauty spot by any stretch of the imagination except for its setting. The terrain is complex for walking . I saved myself the hassle of maps etc by getting back on the ferry going to the considerably more agreeable Valle Gran Rey and signing up with one of the two excellent hiking companies. They pick you up at the hotel, drive you to the mountain and tell you all about the flora and fauna etc in German and in English.By the way the updated (2007) Lonely planet Guide to the Canary Islands is also excellent.
Why not fly into Tenerife North and treat yourself to a day or two in Santa Cruz, wonderful place and the ferry company lays on a complimentary ... Read More:

I had walked the Tramuntana with Charles Davis book Walk Mallorca North & Mountains, but this time we were based in the west so I picked up Walk Mallorca West. It was a real surprise to find so many 5 rated routes in what I though was a gentle region of the island. Even the family enjoyed some of the easier routes including two different routes to Sa Trappa. Great value, up to date, accurate and inspirational; gets my vote.

I have bought books by the excellent walking researcher before, and I was not disappointed. There's a good variety of walks to suit easy half days and challenging hikes. I like the way the descriptions are accurate yet relaxed in style. I am just into GPS and found the waypoints invaluable. The maps are good(OS) and the routes clearly overlaid. Plenty of detail like timings, ascents, descents, compass directions, good pubs!

I have only just got the book and have tested one route, but it was brilliant - I can't wait to get out there again. Highly recommended.

.Walk! Axarquia: Costa Del Sol

I used one of this writer's books earlier this year, so I knew pretty much what to expect. He's got a real knack for going places that have a bad reputation for being overdeveloped (Andorra and now the Costa del Sol) and then finding some really wonderful wild corners. The walking in the Axarquia is superb and I even enjoyed the rough, off road driving to get to some of the more remote itineraries (not sure my wife did!). Highly recommended.

I've been walking in the Pyrenees for nearly three decades now and always stayed away from Andorra because of the shops and tax haven reputation, but I happened to find myself there for family reasons this Summer and a friend gave me this book. What a find! Andorra doesn't have the best mountains in the Pyrennes, but they're not bad and the refuges are great. The book, too. I wish there were more English language guides to the region of this calibre. The maps could be better, but the descriptions and the background information and the itineraries are all excellent. First time I've come across this writer, but I see he has other guidebooks and I'd be ready to try any of them if my travels happen to coincide with his. Detailed sequential instruction on constructing the built-up ship model, Bbt it is primarily directed at US ships. Accurate lists of the various countries' mast rules, including tops, heads, trestletrees etc, and rope & block dimensions, ensure that your model will look like the real thing and not a misproportioned eyesore.
There are lots of hints and tips to making the rigging and the ground tackle (capstans, bitts, winches, anchors) look real, including correct proportions of gunports.

The book does assume that you have an accurate drawing to work from and with this in mind it is a welcome addition to anyone's library. My only complaints are that there should be more detail on planking, and some of the drawings are a tad small, obscuring the detail. ... Read More:
