. The Right Instrument for your Child
by: Atarah Ben-Tovim, Douglas Boyd
August 11, 2005
I found this such a useful book when considering which instrument each of my children were likely to have the most success with. The author looks at physical, emotional and social development as a starting point for matching your child to the sort of instrument most suitable for them. As an example, my 7-year old was keen on learning the flute, but as she is petite and there are no half-size flutes, and her front teeth are missing, this was not the right time to get her started on it! The book helped tremendously with pointing out aspects which I hadn't considered before - I have recommended it and lent it to other parents, and adults for their own purposes too.

. Voices from the Dark Years: The Truth About Occupied France 1940-1945
by: Douglas Boyd
July 01, 2007
For a long time I have been searching for a book that covers the era of Petain and Vichy France and this is nearly it.Douglas Boyd tends to lead you up a cul-de-sac and leave you there but until he either clarifies his writing style or a better version comes along this will have to do.Having said that this does explain much of what until now has been 'unspoken of /hidden' by French historians and writers. It is perhaps short of relevant photographs and tends to rely on 'stock' prints rather than new material, which is available, if you know who to ask.I would have given it 3 1/2 stars but there was no option for that and in view of the fact that it does try to answer the questions I wanted answers to I gave it 4.

by: Douglas Boyd
July 22, 1993
This book which follows the life story of Raoul Duvalier, is not only gripping, but shocking and fast moving. This is a definate 'must read'. I throughly enjoyed it both the first and second time reading it. I absolutly recommend this book to anyhow into a good action book. Can't wait to read more of Boyd's work. It's a definate 'MUST READ'

. The French Foreign Legion
by: Douglas Boyd
March 23, 2006
I'd had my eyes opened to the French Foreign Legion a couple of years ago, and bought the seminal "Legionnaire" by Simon Murray along with a couple of later accounts of life in 2e REP (the elite 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment). Reference was made in all works to battles at Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam, the village of Camaron in Mexico in the 19th Century (celebration of which is the Legion's big day, Camerone), Algeria and the disbanding of 1e REP in shame.
I wanted to get more background to these less-well-known stories: this book provided it. Douglas Boyd has made good use of Legion archives to create an informative, yet easily-readable book describing these events and much more. (That said, sadly Mr Murray's account of the disbandment ... Read More:

. Eleanor, April Queen of Aquitaine
by: Douglas Boyd
February 12, 2004
What makes this book on Eleanor so good is rather than be defeated by the fact that we don't know what Eleanor looked like the author, who lives in the region, did a bit of detective work and found some stone heads and statues that could well be Eleanor and goes into detail about it at the end chapter.
I have taken away a star as he refers to her as the April Queen and says he wants to describe the world, (sights and smells), around Eleanor, but only does it in the first half of the book and not the second which I found disapointing.
