City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Iron Horse (Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck) (Inspector Robert Colbeck)
.The Iron Horse (Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck) (Inspector Robert Colbeck)

by: Edward Marston

Although the 'railways' don't play a significant role in this story as its predecessors I still found it absorbing and difficult to put down.
It took me 2 evenings to finish due to work but entertaining it was. Highly recommended - another success for Edward Marston

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Painted Lady (Christopher Redmayne mystery)
.The Painted Lady (Christopher Redmayne mystery)

by: Edward Marston

January 28, 2008

Edward Marston is the pseudonym of Keith Miles, a fairly prolific and extremely good writer of mainly Elizabethan and medieval mysteries. He has also written mysteries under his own name with both sporting and golf backgrounds. However it is primarily the books that take place earlier in history that I am interested in. He read modern history at Oxford and has had many jobs, including university lecturer, but fortunately for all his readers, he turned to the writing profession.

Araminta Jewell more than lives up to her name. She is one of the most beautiful women in London, but she is more than just a beauty, she is charming and witty and many would say the ideal woman. Even though she is now married to the dreary and none ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Railway Detective
.The Railway Detective

by: Edward Marston

Rather a mixture. Despite the impeccable detail, this story had the feeling of being set in a slightly later period, and I'm not entirely sure why. It might be the dialogue (which I sometimes found pedestrian), or perhaps the Holmesean resonances, especially the characters of the engine driver and his daughter who seemed to me straight out of Conan Doyle, or at least his era. I also found the plot a little thin, espcially the detective's ability to anticipate an outrage at a precise spot in the Crystal Palace, on the slenderest of evidence.
Nevertheless, the story had considerable charm, especially the disarmingly innocent attraction between the detective and the engine driver's daughter. This was refreshing and sensitively done. Indeed ... Read More:

by: Edward Marston

Edward Marston is just one of the pseudonyms of author Keith Miles. He has been a university lecturer, radio, television, and theatre dramatist, and in addition to writing has worked as an actor, director, and dramatist. He has written a large number of books with historical themes, perhaps the most well known being his Domesday series. These revolve around the census of 1086 and a series of mysteries featuring the Elizabethan theatre as their background.

Once you have become familiar with an author's work, his character's and style of writing it is sometimes difficult to become attuned to a new character and storyline, but in this case the author seems to have come up with yet another winner, although his Domesday books will always ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Parliament House (Christopher Redmayne Mystery)
.The Parliament House (Christopher Redmayne Mystery)

by: Edward Marston

January 15, 2007
Edward Marston's "The Parliament House" is set in London in 1670. Charles II aka 'the Merrie Monarch' had by then been king of England for a little over 10 years, and it's been 5 years since the Great Plague, and 4 years since the Great Fire of London in 1666. Although Charles II has been restored as King, Parliament is very much a force to be reckoned with, and one of it's chief members is Sir Julius Cheever who used to be a commander in Cromwell's army, and still opposes royal rule of England (which has earned him quite a few royalist enemies).

Our hero Christopher Redmayne, a young architect, designed Sir Julius' new townhouse, and when a friend of Sir Julius is killed in Christopher's presence he cannot help but investigate. Joined by his friend the constable ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : SOLDIER OF FORTUNE (Captain Rawson 1)
.SOLDIER OF FORTUNE (Captain Rawson 1)

by: Edward Marston

January 28, 2008
I found the most disconcerting thing about this new series was meeting Captain Rawson only recently, involved in a Redmayne mystery (a series I enjoy) during the reign of Charles II. Now he turns up in Queen Anne's reign, still a young man. Is he a time traveller or has he discovered the secret of eternal youth? Also, the endless battles were tedious. Not one of Edward's best.

After reading one of the author's books, I avidly sought out all the other books by Edward Marston and not a single one has ever disappointed me. They are about a period of history that I love. His Elizabethan theatre series of books were wonderful and he has continued them through from 1988 to 2006. The ... Read More:
