.Myth and Middle Earth: Exploring the Legends Behind J.R.R.Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" by: Leslie Ellen Jones May 22, 2003 Myth & Middle Earth I have for a long time been interested in Dark Age and Medieval history and the myths and legends that are a part of it. I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings a few years ago to see what all the fuss was about, and, although I enjoyed the stories, I felt a little disappointed by the experience. I bought this book to see if I had missed something. The Preface gives a brief overview of Tolkien, his works and the book's content. The Preliminary Mythology Note mentions ancient works which have been used as reference in the comparisons. Chapters 1 and 2 give an overview of Tolkien's life and his area of expertise respectively. .The Fatal Crown by: Ellen Jones July 01, 1991 If you go in with that frame of mind, this is an enjoyable tale. I remember having similar feelings when I started Barbara Erskine's Child of The Phoenix and being a bit put off the way Joanna was portrayed so differently than in SKP's awesome Here be Dragons. Than I told myself it was just a story and kicked back and enjoyed myself immensely. An intriguing concept, Maud and Stephen being lovers and Henry II being a result of that union, although I doubt there's much basis in fact for this theory. All in all enjoyable and quick read, a nice book to lose yourself in on a rainy weekend. The book is out of print, and I found a copy readily at my local library.
