If you go in with that frame of mind, this is an enjoyable tale. I remember having similar feelings when I started Barbara Erskine's Child of The Phoenix and being a bit put off the way Joanna was portrayed so differently than in SKP's awesome Here be Dragons. Than I told myself it was just a story and kicked back and enjoyed myself immensely.
An intriguing concept, Maud and Stephen being lovers and Henry II being a result of that union, although I doubt there's much basis in fact for this theory. All in all enjoyable and quick read, a nice book to lose yourself in on a rainy weekend. The book is out of print, and I found a copy readily at my local library.
