. The Genealogy of Morals (Dover Thrift Editions)
by: Friedrich Nietzsche
June 26, 2003
This particular piece of Nietzsche's writing is a marvelous work - it is interesting and lively, much as Nietzsche's own writing and tendency toward the dramatic was noted by his contemporaries. Nietzsche's father was a Lutheran minister, but he died five years after Nietzsche's birth in 1844. Nietzsche was raised by his mother, grandmother and aunts; later in his life, his sister would become executor of his estate (after Nietzsche had become incapable of managing his own affairs) and reshape his philosophy and writings in her own idea - this becomes a running motif in later anthologies of Nietzsche; editors can quote and clip to fit their own agendas. In some ways, that is true of the text here, but in much less inappropriate ways than others, ... Read More:

. Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Classics S.)
by: Friedrich Nietzsche
July 31, 2003
As a Christian, a few people might find it slightly odd that I actually like Nietzche and his works. I'm sure he would absolutely loathe me, but he seems to have loathed everything so in truth I'm not that worried. Thus spoke Zarathustra, which I have not actually completed, seems to just about summarize Nietzche's views, Zoroaster is made in Nietzche's philosophical avatar. If you are like me, a Christian (or religous), who likes to have their views challenged, and perhaps even confronted with good or irefutable arguments, Nietzche is a good place to start, and (just from my partial reading), where better to start than Thus spoke Zarathustra. If you are an atheist, this book will give you some extra arguments, and make you feel very good about yourself with Nietzche ... Read More:

. Ecce Homo: How One Becomes What One Is (Penguin Classics)
by: Friedrich Nietzsche
August 26, 2004
I like Muhammed Ali. I like his elan, audacity, humour and lack of humility. Nietzsche, in this autobiography is the same and not the same. I find it an extremely moving reckoning of the life that one man had so far lived; alone. Nietzshce gives us some classsic phrases: 'I am not a man, I am dynamite' and, speaking of himself in the third person, 'one is either born after him or before him'. Many readers have noted the unchained egotism as a sign of the madness that was to possess him in a few weeks time, yet there are moments in this book of truly profound and moving humility. Yes, humility, a quality not often associated with Nietzsche, despite being one of his most noticeable and endearing traits;'Perhaps I am a buffon', he writes. Never in the books of any other philosopher ... Read More:

. Beyond Good and Evil (Penguin Classics)
by: Friedrich Nietzsche
February 27, 2003
This is a fascinating book, a crucial theme of which is the support for a grown-up way of existance that has sadly been overshadowed by that of lesser minds. Another thread running through the book is the idea of the 'will to power' as the key to understanding our lives. Along the way, we also get opinions on the woman's relation to the kitchen; what it means to be a recluse; flashing criticism of the English and academics; criticism of Kant and other philosophers; a brilliant investigation of the 'master' morality, and just about anything else you could possibly imagine. Nietzsche's use of language is masterful in its creativity, colour, allure and entertainment value. His insights are profound and always accurate (perhaps with the exception of when he is talking about music). This really ... Read More:

. The Antichrist (Great Books in Philosophy)
by: Friedrich Nietzsche
November 20, 2000
Ok, so lets be straight folks. We know he is a showman , a rhetorical genious, a martyr to a pointless job (of finishin off christianity), a legend, an antichrist and for marys sake...a saint! but he still has it dont he. That ability to melt our hearts, fill us with passion and awake every last lethargic spirit in our soul. Who will deny his eternity, his love of infinity...go on i dare you....believe his hope in humanity. his love of the future. his evry delight in expression...then u r something. then u r a man. then i will allow u to tae say sofin on is behalf...that l do i suppose.

. Human, All Too Human (Penguin Classics)
by: Friedrich Nietzsche
July 29, 2004
Whether you ultimately agree or disagree with Nietzsche at the end of his book you will have read one of the most cutting and persuasive arguments for the fallibility of man ever published.
Human all too Human certainly isn't The 7 Habits of Highly effective People, or How to Win friends and Influence People, but it is an infinitely more richly rewarding and brutally honest book than that any of the white lies and generic plagiarised so called `truths' to be found in those works and others of their ilk.
In essence I believe it is actually a positive work, although having read it through over a period of time it does have the tendency to flavour one slightly negatively towards other people and maybe even oneself at times. In hindsight I'd recommend dipping into it regularly rather than wolfing ... Read More:
