. Essential Fantastic Four Volume 7 TPB: 0 (Essential Fantastic Four)
by: Gerry Conway
August 13, 2008
This volume covers 1973-1975 and starts with the re-appearance of two old "friends" Wyatt Wingfoot and a very early FF foe The Miracle Man whose powers have improved somewhat over the years.
Then the tyrant of the Negative Zone Annihilus returns, issue 140 is the last one I remember buying in my mis-spent youth. Annihilus' origin is revealed and the end of this story sees Sue leaving the FF after Reed's attempt to save their son mis-fires. The rest of this volume is spent repairing those wounds. The Inhuman Medusa is still with the team and becomes their fourth member during these stories.
Other old foes return, Doctor Doom twice, the last tale involving the Silver Surfer and his arch-nemesis Mephisto who pulls a tragic double-bluff ... Read More:

A very solid collection of tales that encompass triumph and tragedy.
This volume was brought out in time to ride the wake of the recent movie but the tales gathered here are from the very early years 1969-1971.
Starting with a 2 issue story introducing the superb looking Controller closely followed by the Night Phantom and a tag team of two old Marvel favourites The Unicorn and the Red Ghost. Other old Marvel foes like The Titanium Man, Lucifer, the Collector and Zodiac are mixed in with a new Crimson Dynamo, Midas, Firebrand, Spy-Master and a group of alien planet-formers led by the Foreman.
Guest appearances from the Sub-Mariner, Daredevil, Nick Fury and the Avengers.
The back stories are very important in the early days, ... Read More:

. Essential Spider-Man: v. 6 (Essential (Marvel Comics))
by: Stan Lee, Gerry Conway
July 01, 2004
Starting with the completion of the Dr. Octopus V Hammerhead cliffhanger from Essential Vol. 5 ending with Aunt May talked into becoming Ock's housekeeper. It kicks in proper with the Disruptor using a genetically modified 10' tall thug, the Smasher to further his political ends, the villain's identity comes as no surprise but the ending does and starts a new chain of deaths in Spidey's life.
A trip to Canada leads to a clash with the Hulk and the death of the lawyer who Peter Parker is seeking, and the weirdness of Aunt May's legacy. This is all but a taster for what is to come as Norman Osborn's memory returns and he once again becomes the schizophrenic Green Goblin and remembers Spider-Man's secret identity, this time with tragic results for Gwen ... Getting off to a slow start as Peter moves in with his old foe Flash Thompson briefly and meets the Mind-Worm.
It kicks in properly with the Grizzly, the first of a series of fights organised by the superb Jackal. Then JJJ hires Mysterio to fight Spidey.
The Punisher appears in a nicely disturbing tale of renegade arms sales. Then a trip to Paris to rescue a kidnapped JJJ, hiding in France after the Mysterio debacle only to meet the Gallic menace Cyclone. Returning to the States Peter finds Gwen, who was killed by the Green Goblin waiting for him, the start of a great cycle of stories.
Another old foe The Scorpion teams up with the Jackal before Spidey goes to the swamps to get some photographs of the Man-Thing only to find the Lizard is ... Read More:

The first part of this book contains the early appearances of Daimon Hellstrom "the Son of Satan" from his first partial appearance in Ghost Rider #1-2 and his real encore in Marvel Spotlight #12 up to the complete 8 issue run of his own magazine.
I was torn over these stories, I bought many of these first time round as the first two Marvel Spotlight covers attracted my attention. Set in St. Louis the character is isolated from much of the Marvel universe for the first few years. The tales are pretty deep and cover all sorts of demonic possession as he fights against his father to protect humanity. In the beginning Daimon turns into the SoS at night but over time he gets the power to control the change.
He also travels back in time to Atlantis to ... Read More:

. Essential Daredevil: v. 4 (Essential Daredevil): v. 4 (Essential Daredevil)
by: Gerry Conway, Gary Friedrich, Steve Gerber, Steve Englehart
September 12, 2007
Ever heard of a supervillain called The Blue Talon? No? There's a reason for that. He appears in this collection; he's a Japanese martial artist with blades on his hands, hired to kill Daredevil by one of his enemies. He attacks, misses a couple of times, and then hits a gas main and blows himself up, having achieved nothing whatsoever. There was no reason for him to exist in the first place; he doesn't even serve the purpose of demonstrating how awesome Daredevil is, because rather than being beaten in combat he manages to kill himself through sheer bad luck. In all of these respects - his pointlessness, his uselessness, his failure to show what Daredevil is capable of, his capacity for random self-destruction - The Blue Talon bears a strong resemblance to this ...
