. Seeing Red
by: Graham Poll
June 02, 2008
On his retirement as a referee it would appear that Graham Poll as chosen to write a book not about his life but as an opportunity to put his side of the story about many of the controversial episodes in his refereeing career. Fair enough. Unfortunately though, this gets a bit wearing after a while and, as a result, I found this book it to be a little dull.
It gets off to a slow start when far too much time is spent going over the events of a now largely forgotten Chelsea v Spurs game from a few years ago and, to me, really picks up after that.
Amongst football watchers, Graham Poll was never the most popular referee in the game, and this book makes it clear that he wasn't held in very high regard by many of his fellow referees neither. ... Read More:

The Rough Guides rarely disappoint. They are thorough and interesting. My only complaint is that Murcia, as usual in guidebooks like this, just doesn't get the treatment it deserves. I always buy the most recent edition, but suggest you can probably skip an edition now and then!

. Fulgrim: Visions of Treachery (Horus Heresy)
by: Graham McNeill
July 02, 2007
If you've read any of my other reviews you will see my biggest issue with this series is how rambling and poorly edited they are. Indeed the promised show down mentioned at the end of book 3 finally happens here at the end of book 5. But finally the promise of book 1 is realised 4 books later.
So here we have the fall from grace of Fulgrim. Now of all the Chaos Gods Slaanesh is always the most intriguing. It is the god of lust and decadence and while you can see marines falling for the bloodlust of Khorne (less so for the decay of Nurgle) the idea of a decadent fall sounds very human. After all how many warriors have been suckered by feminine charms and a comfy sofa rather than years on horseback fighting through the mud?
It's all done very well and ... Read More:

. The Discovery of France
by: Graham Robb
September 07, 2007
I must admit I was seduced by the wonderful cover photo of Mont-Saint-Michel, and the title which suggests a romantic travel book, where the local peculiarities are grounded in the authors knowledge of local history - something like a H.V.Morton's Traveller in Italy for today (and for France).
What you actually get is a social history of the provincial French peasantry from 1780 to 1880. I now find out that the American edition has a sub-title very like this, but not a sign of it on my copy, or on Amazon-UK. However, it is well written and so not as dull as that sounds, in fact it is good to read, and interesting in a rather vague way - paints pictures rather then pushing a thesis.
The only way it is 'heavy' is the 400 good-size pages, 100 of which are notes ... Read More:

. False Gods (Horus Heresy)
by: Graham McNeill
June 15, 2006
This is the big one. The one where you know who turns sides. The whole transformation to traitor is an intriguing and thoroughly worthwhile read.
It introduces one of the ruinous powers of chaos and well.
Again full of sinister plots and betrayals, a fantastic read.
The one reason why it wouldnt get 100/100 is because McNeill seems to put too many storylines running parallel to one-another. This made me frustrated at times, but the fact that other than this the book is amazingly well writen and engrosing I couldnt think twice about putting the book down.
I genuinley felt sad after this book, which shows I had been drawn into an emotional bond over the two beginning volumes. Great writing 5 stars!
