. Learn in Your Car: German (Complete Language Course)
by: Henry N. Raymond
October 01, 2002
Having paid £29.99 for this course on the basis of the favourable reviews on Amazon, never have I been so disappointed.
The first disc was little more than an endless stream of vocabulary, with very little chance, guidance or practice on how to structure a sentence of day-to-day use. No special method of teaching is evident, nor is ones memory helped by such a high emphasis on vocabulary.
As for the selection of vocabulary offered in the first disc, much of it is irrelevant for day to day conversation; it is as though the author decided to list everything that could be seen on an international journey, on every form of transport, from a point of departure until arriving in a German hotel.
I don't ... Read More:

. French: Level 1 (Learn in Your Car)
by: Henry N. Raymond
October 01, 2002
I drive about an hour each day and wanted something that I could use in the car. Unlike the previous reviewer, I find the sound is absolutely fine. There is an option to have French played on one speaker and English on the other but I reckon it is best on normal stereo. I liked the CD so much, I bought the 2nd and 3rd series. These are not quite as good as the speaker hesitates before saying whether polite or familiar forms are to be used. Also, all are slightly "American" in terms of English phraseology but not too bad. It is a very good way to learn good diction and vocabulary but you really need other material, eg writing and speaking to learn properly. Overall recommended as a very good product to supplement other learning material if you can ... Read More:

. Learn in Your Car Spanish: Levels 1-3 (Learn in Your Car)
by: Henry N. Raymond
January 01, 2004
This course consists of nine CD's - three for each of the three parts of the course. There are also three small booklets, one for each part, each covering three of the CD's. The CD content consists of a very bored American woman reciting English words or phrases, followed by a pause, followed by a native speaker reciting the Spanish equivalent, at speed, twice. And that's it. There is no explanation whatsoever for the grammar being covered. Each "lesson" also starts and ends with an excruciating electronic tone that is annoying and headache-inducing. This all makes for a very "cold" teaching method - there is no empathy for the student and I was left feeling very much on my own. If you try to use this course in your car exclusively, ... . Russian: Levels 1, 2 & 3 (Learn in Your Car)
by: Henry N. Raymond
December 31, 2002
One of the most difficult aspects in learning any foreign language is developing listening and response skills. This course so far has enabled words, phrases and native dialect to sink in somehow without drills and repetition. I haven't tried to figure out the logic of this course, but there seems to be an effective progression of word acquisition which I find both curious and pleasing. Without any rigorous effort - I have found myself repeating and pre-empting the course vocabulary - in much the same way one remembers the words to a song on the radio?! My only criticism of this course is a very obvious one. I believe that the Cyrillic alphabet and Slavonic grammar probably don't lend themselves easily to such intuitive learning ... Read More:

. Italian: Level 1 (Learn in Your Car)
by: Henry N. Raymond

These tapes contain about 40 "lessons", which aren't lessons at all but just lists of words and phrases where you have the opportunity to listen to the Italian phrases and repeat them. There's no association with a situation to help you remember, and no explanation of any of the vocabulary or grammar you are "using". It may be quite effective for remembering lists of words, but not in any way that you'll find easy to use in a conversation. I'd advise you to steer clear of this, except maybe as an extra tool to help you revise your existing Italian vocabulary. If you want to begin Italian, this is completely unsuitable ... go for Michel Thomas or Pimsleur instead, both of which are excellent.
