. Fred and Rose
by: Howard Sounes
December 07, 1995
There is nothing compelling or amazing about this book not because of the author or his style but for the content. I struggle to find the benefit of reading about these horrific events. Don't get me wrong I am not sensitive; I enjoy watching and reading horror but I got half way through this and I've decided to burn the book. If you enjoy reading this book then there is something wrong with you. It's not fiction, these two characters deserve to rot in hell

. Down the Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan
by: Howard Sounes
March 04, 2002
Good, but my feeling is it rests too much on the laurels of the newly-uncovered information at the expense of covering other ground more fully. For example, the born-again period is light to say the least, and other apparently important moments seemed to get sidelined.
As often the case, there's a practically day-by-day account of Dylan during the mercurial '63-'66 period, but thereafter noticeable blank spots start to appear.
It may be that BD is too successful at keeping things under wraps, or, more plainly, that he wasn't doing anything interesting during those periods (although I find that hard to believe.) In any event, particularly during the final couple of chapters, things do tend to tail off into almost reportage and that ... Read More:

. Locked In The Arms Of A Crazy Life: Charles Bukowski: Locked in the Arms of a Crazy Life
by: Howard Sounes
January 18, 2007
This is a magnificent biography of Bukowski, a writer who turned his life into fiction, twisting the story ever so slightly in the process. What the author does is untwist the tale, sorting fact from fiction, and making Charles "Hank" Bukowski come alive as a fallible but endearing personality.
With frequent quotations from Bukowski's writing, and contributions from all the important people in his life, this is a literary biography that grips the reader, entertains and educates. It is also commendably succinct, written somewhat in the style of Bukowski, as a tribute to him, so short sentences, paragraphs and chapters and lots of dialogue and anecdote. If you love Bukowski, you will relish this life of Hank.

. Seventies: The Sights, Sounds and Ideas of a Brilliant Decade
by: Howard Sounes
July 02, 2007
For one like me, who had his formative years in the austere, but innocent postwar years and became an adult in the permissive, but optimistic 1960s, the 1970s stands for economic backlash and a more pessimistic view of the future. However, I must admit that Howard Saunes manage to catch my interest with his colourful description of the decade's most prominent personalities within the cultural field - in the visual arts, literature, film and pop music - many of them icons today. Sounes' biographies, most of them about English and American artists, are all very readable and seem to be well researched. (Even if I am not a great fun of pop music, the tragic fate of many of the pop musicians cannot but make an impression and strengthen my belief that the most important thing ... Read More:

. Bukowski in Pictures ("Rebel Inc")
by: Howard Sounes
February 01, 2001
Howard Sounes has done an excellent job in tracking down the people who knew Bukowski at diffrent stages of his life and obtaining these great period photo's. infact Sounes does some snapping himself going back to old haunts such as the bars and hotels where Bukowski used to flop and taking the pictures of the places as they stand now. Bukowski in pictures is a fitting companion to the written Biography of Bukowski that Sounes wrote a few years back and along with other recent books coming out such as the Beginners guide to Bukowski, Bukowski Unleashed! and the Pivano book of interviews, this book will go a long way to keeping the memory of the old man alive and keeping his growing legion of fans happy!
