City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Fears of Henry IV: The Life of England's Self-Made King
.The Fears of Henry IV: The Life of England's Self-Made King

by: Ian Mortimer

This was a good biography of a little-understood personality in late medieval England. I felt that Mortimer did build up a convincing picture of the king and what was important to him (family, honour, duty etc) and he draws good comparisons between the weak and autocratic Richard II and his more flexible, compentent cousin Henry. Having said that, I agree with the other reviewers that this was not as good as Mortimer's biography of Edward III, "The Perfect King". Mortimer does tend to over-emphasise certain points, such as Henry's descent from his less famous (in our times) grandfather, Henry of Grosmont, Duke of Lancaster, which he probably mentions about 15 times (how can Grosmont be so important in Henry's life when he died before his ... The renewed interest in the reign of Edward II was bound to trigger new interest in the reign of his son and heir Edward III. Ian Mortimer had already set the stage with his excellent biography on the Earl of March (the Greatest Traitor). It is a welcome and logic move to follow this book up with a biography of Edward III.

The title of the biography is already a clear indication how Ian Mortimer sees the king. However, Ian Mortimer even goes a step further and starts his book however with a chapter how he wants to see Edward III and re-establish the king's reputation. I am not sure that this was a wise move as the following chapter only partly supports the sweeping statement of a perfect king.

Nevertheless the book covers ... Read More:

.The Greatest Traitor: The Life of Sir Roger Mortimer, Ruler of England 1327-1330

Ian Mortimer does a grand job in shining a light on a dark corner of English history. I first came across the notorious Roger Mortimer years ago as a kid when my father took me on a guided trip to 'Mortimer's Hole', Roger's hiding place at Nottingham Castle. There wasn't much said about Roger, just that he murdered King Edward II and ruled the realm before being undone in 1330 by the young Edward III. Ian Mortimer puts flesh on his bones here, with a meticulously researched account of his life with some compelling detail [such as Roger's grandfather keeping Simon de Montfort's head as a souvenir]and well drawn portraits of Roger and his supporting cast - Aymer de Valence, for example, emerges as a fascinating character.

Ian Mortimer convincingly ... Read More:

Being brought up firmly in the school of Edward II -Berkeley Castle - red hot poker in places that made teenage scholars snigger, I approached this book with a great deal of caution. I have to say that Mortimer has made acompelling case for the survival of Edward II, which I personally can go along with. Even if you don't agree with this thesis you should still buy this book if you are interested in: the Fourteenth Century, Edward III, the Hundred Years War. Mortimer takes Edward from vulnerable youth, through warrior king, to manipulated old man, In my opinion this will be the definitive work on Edward III for many years to come. Well written, copiously researched, brilliant, so buy it!
