. The Thames & Hudson Dictionary of the Italian Renaissance
from: Thames & Hudson Ltd
1983-06
Although it might seem like a dry read, this book is in fact a real gem. It is remarkably comprehensive, covering social, political and economic matters as well as the more usual topics of art history, which are themselves written with the general reader in mind. In my mind the best thing about the book is the warmth and wit with which the entries are written; I was expecting the book to be slightly chilly and condescending in manner, but many of the entries are almost irreverent, perfectly suited to a newcomer to the subject such as myself. I really only bought this book because I was struggling to read Jacob Burckhardt's "The Civilisation of the Renaissance in Italy", and thought a reference book might help, but I have not been so pleasantly ... . The Civilization of Europe in the Renaissance
by: J.R. Hale
November 07, 2005
Hale is the distinguished author of many books on the history of the Renaissance, and this work--written near the end of his career--is a synthesis of a lifetime of thought, study, and research on the subject. This is a masterful look at European civilization during the age we identify with the somewhat liquid term "Renaissance." Hale's approach is thematic rather than strictly chronological, and the general reader may find this a bit distracting if he does not have any previous knowledge of the history of the period. For that reader it may also be somewhat scholarly in tone, but it is not a tedious or dry read by any means. On the contrary, Hale's wide range of learning and his use of many wonderful illustrations give the ... Read More:

. Machiavelli and Renaissance Italy
by: J.R. Hale
February 24, 1972
Until 1512, when the Medici family returned to power and Niccolo Machiavelli's consequent 'retirement' gave him leisure in which to write, he was an official of the Florentine chancery. As such Machiavelli travelled on diplomatic missions to the courts of such magnificent rulers as Louis XII, Pope Julius II and Cesare Borgia, and played an active part in the intricate negotiations characteristic of Renaissance diplomacy. In this absorbing biography Professor Hale illustrates the importance of the relationship between Machiavelli's practical experience and his unique contribution to political theory.

. Renaissance Europe 1480-1520
by: J R Hale
January 01, 1971
This is the essential key to understand any other text about war and revolts in the Renaissance. As you progress you feel the anger of people squeezed by unfair taxes, of unpaid peasants converted into soldiers without any training, the hate that could arise in the countryside against the cities. The book systematically studies the reasons for the wars, the recruitment methods and the society of soldiers, and then their impact in society, direct and indirect. If you have ever wondered what kind of guys defended Malta with the knights against the turks or where Alba got his cruel soldiers from, this is the book. And also you can get some clues of how it was possible that Spain got bankrupt partly because the wars were taking place abroad while the ... Read More:
