.The Greeks: A Land and People Since the War by: James Pettifer May 26, 1994 I found this book very interesting as it explores through a personal and human point of view, Greece the country and its people. It is not an ordinary travel guide, it is not a description of beaches and resorts or mountains or other attractions. But rather it is a book about a proud people, their history and their culture, and how they have come to be where they are today. My only criticism would be that perhaps more emphasis could be placed on the positive aspects of modern Greek history and the successes of modern Greeks, rather than their past misfortunes. The book is written in a easy to read style which makes it difficult to put the book down. The title is a little misleading in that the book deals with many more subjects than Ataturk and the challenge of a revitalised and dynamic islam. As a Turk who has visited Turkey on many occasions as well as keeping a small holiday villa, I find his descriptions and analysis almost perfect. The nationalist nature of Turkey makes it difficult for Turks to realise their short-comings, but Pettifer outlines them diplomatically.
