This is a handy book, but doesn't convey a great deal of feeling or enthusiasm for the place and feels a little bare. Luckily I stumbled upon the Cadogan guide to Croatia by James Stewart which really enthuses the reader and gives more information of all kinds, so I recommend that one.

Bedrock for many a travellers itinerary. I had so many of these I set up a website to get rid of them.
I found this book useful in that it covers, in some depth, all areas you're likely to visit.
You will find yourself referring to it for basic information.

Lonely Planet has finally got its act together and upgraded the badly flawed and messy 1st edition of its traveller's guide to Crete. The 1st edition while 75% there just had too many inaccuracies and inconsistencies to be considered a good guide: directions were often 180 degrees out, maps were incorrect, recommendations were strangely pitched at travellers with more money than taste and that front cover ...urrgh!

All that has changed with the new edition of the Crete guide, published in February 2002. This book, after an initial review by this critic, is a stunner and a winner. A fantastic book, which you really should buy if you plan on seeing France. The amount of information in here is vast, and yet readable (I read it cover to cover as bed time reading to plan my travels!). On the one hand it is full of practicalities such as telephone numbers, opening hours, travel information etc. but it also uses good descriptive language so vivid as to give you a good 'feel' for places, stirring up mental images of those Parisian cafes and Provencal meadows that possess a certain je ne sais quoi...
