It would seem almost impossible to write a one-volume travel book on the USA but somehow Rough Guides has managed it in style.

I would usually hesitate to spend more than £15 on a paperback but this is so detailed and well-written I find myself returning to it again and again.

These days it's probably easier to use online resources when choosing accommodation but as a pithy guide to resorts and for planning trip itineries, this Rough Guide is invaluable.

I was really disappointed with this book, as I have had great experience with Rough Guide's to other places in the past.
There's a lot of general observation without the useful information you need as a traveller, eg. it'll tell you that california's a good place to surf but doesn't include any info on where to hire equipment, take lessons etc.
Cross-referencing between maps and restaurants is in places non-existent which is pretty annoying as well.

There's a lot of general observation without the useful information you need as a traveller, eg. it'll tell you that california's a good place to surf but doesn't include any info on where to hire equipment, take lessons etc.

I was researching LA in terms of atmosphere because I am writing a book set there, rather than looking for cheap tips and tricks for tourists. The Virgin guide is trivial shopping; the Time Out/Penguin guide is well written but basically for trivials; this one is really excellent and makes you feel you know the place before you even get there - great sweeps of atmophere plus all the telling detail. 100%

Get this book before leaving for California. As a California historian, columnist, travel writer and author of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MISCELLANY, I found this book an excellent source to advise visitors to read prior to making the trip. My only negative comment is that this book, as with too many others like it, refelcts incorrectly that Southern California is all about 1. Los Angeles (and the immediate area) or 2. San Diego. In actuality, lifetime residents (as myself) will tell you there is so much more to So-Cal than L.A. and San Diego. And, contrary to the belief that So-Cal is nearly always sunny, this is only true in the coastal areas. Travel 100 miles inland to the mountains and you will experience 4-seasons, complete with snowy winters. ... Read More:
