This isn't so much a laugh out loud funny book but more the kind where you can appreciate some of his silly, OTT views. Clarkson has a gift for phrases and while a lot of it is sneering, it is enjoyable sneering from someone who doesn't take himself too seriously.

This is best delved into while having a meditative dump.

Even though Clarkson himself says so ("Good God I love being middle class") the truth is much more inspiring and it's nice to see how modest he is. Truth is, he's actually working class but has come into a lot of money using his talents over the years.

Firstly, this is more than a book about cars. It is Mr Clarkson's dry, witty and always cynical outlook on the world. If, like me, you find relief in discovering someone who is still politically incorrect, chauvanistic and doesn't care who knows it you will love the book. I found a lot of myself reflected in reading this

I have not enjoyed reading a book as much as this in a long time. The format of the reviews makes this an easy read to pick up and put down. Reviews are about 4 pages on average with great photography. The first 3 pages of a review are devoted to a humorous commentary on something seemingly unconnected with a car. This book then, Born to be Riled, is absolutely fantastic.

I have to say, this book is one of the best in the Clarkson series. I read the paperback version of this one, but also own the hardback version due to someone's error on eBay. Don't worry, though, I did get Clarkson's Motorworld hardback book which I actually ordered but got to keep B.T.B.R as well (haha, eBay loser!)

This book is unutterably fantastic. It includes all of Clarkson's usual wit, sarcasm and exaggeration.
His sense of humour is out of this world funny.
I still maintain he should become a guest on Mock the Week.

From cover to cover there'll be a smile on your face from ear to ear that'll cut your face clean in half.

3.5 stars really. The author is fun to watch in action on TV. He is not afraid to speak his mind and has a unique turn of phrase when critcally examining something. He writes in much the same way. In fact, you sometimes catch yourself reading like Clarkson talks - complete with the pregnant pauses!

A light-hearted read, really. I did find some of the explanations/comments frustrating though. There is a chapter on Australia with a few outlandish statements that could be read as fact when they're not. Outlandish statements are, of course, pure, classic Clarkson but it got me thinking what else in the book (several countries I am not too familiar with) was really an embellishment - a "Clarksonism".

Okay, I'm only 12 years old. But, I've grown out of Beano (as you've probably gathered by this review). I Know You Got Soul is a riveting read. Magnificently written in every way. If I was a critic, and by no means am I, I'm certain I couldn't find a flaw with it.

This book is a compilation of 21 marvellous machines that have something that other machines just haven't got. The list includes Concorde, the AK47, the Spitfire, Yamato, the Millennium Falcon, the B-52, the Graf Zeppelin and many others. As soon as I started reading this book, I could see where he was coming from.
In this spectacular read, Clarkson explains the machines that he thinks have soul, and he's not afraid to tell you what doesn't.

Was half way through this book when a mate pointed out to me how frightfully lazy Clarkson was in his writing having only written one proper book. I would have liked to dispute this but, given how this book is basically Clarkson newspaper columns, without dates or any re-editing, I was inclined to agree.

Of course, there are some genuinely amusing pieces in this collection. However, though there are some diamonds amongst the dirt, the majority of these articles are about old cars and is tediously glib yet unmemorable.

Like all newspaper articles, one ends up feeling it is merely 'eye candy', which briefly entertains but then leaves no feeling of time well spent.
