.South Downs Way: Winchester to Eastbourne (British Walking Guides) by: Jim Manthorpe February 15, 2007 I, and 2 pals, used this book to walk the entire SDW last Month and found it to be an invaluable guide to the route. With accurate timings, great detailed maps and even the odd off-beat funny comment, it was easy to navigate and follow the route from it. The detail on planning was also excellent and we planned the whole trip from detail in this book - even refering to it during the trip to change our plans! OK a couple of telephone numbers have changed, but a quick look on the net produced the correct ones without problem. Of course the trip was made much better by not having to get the waterproofs out once, but I don't think this book was responsible for the weather! It contains practical advice on what to take, distances between certain key towns & villages, a chart showing basic details of facilities at the main towns & villages (such as cash points, food stores, post offices, whether there are places to eat & stay,etc), and an overview of pubic transport. There book then splits the path into several sections so that it can detail specific route guidance information and maps for each section. There is a description of the main towns and villages which you will pass on each section, plus any local tourist attractions. .Scottish Highlands (Hillwalking Guide) by: Jim Manthorpe July 10, 2005 We recently went on holiday took Scotland and took this book out of the library as a guide. We tried two walks from the book. We walked in fair weather and with the appropriate maps, a compass and proper equipment. We would not call ourselves "Munro baggers" but we have walked a fair bit. The descriptions were a bit vague and when you have poor visibility as we did one walk it was downright useless. The walks need to have a lot more detail and to be checked for typos and errors unless you want to get seriously lost. The book has history, banter and some nice ideas in it, but do not under any circumstances rely on the book alone, get a decent scale map and compass a GPS unit, and do a google search to corroborate the route... >>See More Reviews & Details on Scottish Highlands (Hillwalking Guide) |
