.Sri Lanka (Lonely Planet Country Guide) by: Joe Cummings, Teresa Cannon, Mark Elliott, Ryan Ver Berkmoes August 01, 2006 I've just spent three months travelling round Sri Lanka with both the Rough Guide and the Lonely Planet guide. I have to say, that the Rough Guide proved, on almost all counts, to be the much better option. Obviously neither guide is perfect - the Rough Guide is excellent on the South coast, but not so good when you travel further north, and both guides fail to give much useful information (or the correct information!) about how to travel around by public bus. However, the Lonely Planet guide is pretty inaccurate throughout. Many of the maps are wrong, for instance, and it fails to actually give a balanced view of whether place is worth visiting. .Thailand (Lonely Planet Country Guide) by: Joe Cummings, Rebecca Blond, Morgan Konn, Matt Warren, China Williams September 01, 2005 I found the 'Let's Go' guides to SE Asia way superior to the 'Lonely Planet'. The trouble with the 'LP' is that it tends to keep you on the well trodden trail and advises you to be cautious at every step. The whole idea of travelling or backpacking is, I feel, to experience something new. You need to throw caution to the wind and just go for it. I think the opinions and tips in the 'LP' advise too much on what not to do and what nasties may happen if you do. If you like to stay with the herd following the beaten track then this is the book for you. Both are better for different areas, both were a bit lacking when you get away from the main areas and some areas were already out of date once you were away from the main centres. .Vietnam (Lonely Planet Country Guide) by: Joe Cummings, Daniel Robinson March 31, 2001 Anyone heading to Vietnam should consider buying this book- lonely planet always do the job when it comes to providing basic information. However, I found that while I used the maps non-stop and found the sections on local and national history interesting and informative, I only used the sections on food, accommodation and excursions as indicators of average prices. Sadly, the places in the book were often overrun (and therefore overpriced) as a consequence of inclusion, and better deals could ususlly be found independantly. Another problem with the book is that I found much of the information to be out of date- Vietnam is a country in transition to the extent that it would be difficult for any guidebook to keep up with it.
