. Istanbul: The Imperial City
by: John Freely
February 26, 1998
After the good reviews and recommendations I was disappointed by this book. Of course it is ambitious to chart 27 centuries of the history of one city but the book rather turns into one long chronicle of who succeeds whom as ruler of Byzantium with a lot of irrelevant names and relationships. Better books exist to both describe the architectural splendours of Istanbul and convey a sense of its atmosphere.

. The Cyclades
by: John Freely
March 31, 2006
I have been looking for a guide to the Cyclades for years and finally, here it is - by the wonderful travel writer, John Freely. This is a beautifully-written, informative and fascinating account of these amazing islands. I highly recommend it to anyone who is travelling to the Cyclades or is interested in their incredible past and present.

. Companion Guide to Istanbul: And Around the Marmara (Companion Guides)
by: John Freely
May 04, 2000
This is essentially a compendium of three earlier Freely books: Strolling through Istanbul, Around the sea of Marmara and The Bosphorus, all published by Istanbul's Redhouse press. Freely is an excellent and throrough writer and it would be harder to find a better cultural guide. The marketplace is slightly crowded by the fact that by the previous three volumes and his "Blue Guide" (which is also excellent) are still available. This volume is updated and slightly abbreviated from the other three books and fine for most people's needs, although the Blue Guide has slightly better plans. If you are planning to stay longer or are a real completist you might want to spend three times as much on three Redhouse volumes.

. Inside the Seraglio: Private Lives of the Sultans of Istanbul
by: John Freely
March 31, 2005
John Freely certainly loves his subject: his description of Istanbul and its glorious architecture is sensitive and touching. However, his book ultimately fails in its objective: it is neither an in-depth history of the Seraglio, the Harem where the Sultan's wives lived, nor is it a good description of the "private lives of the sultans", as the subtitle of the book promises.
Throughout, the author seems undecided on whether he should follow themes, or just pursue a chronological narrative. The result is a mixture of both, and this remains unsatisfactory. John Freely's habit of applying the same format to the description of every sultan - how many years he spent in the "Cage", hidden away while he awaited his turn at succcession to the ... Read More:
