. Paradise Lost (Penguin Classics)
by: John Milton
February 27, 2003
Although "Paradise Lost" is one of the great works of the English language and should be read by every serious literary mind, I found the Penguin edition somewhat lacking. The notes are often brief and unhelpful, and the introduction, while well-written, misses certain key points of cultural history and context which are found in other editions. Overall, while this is a decent copy of the work for a first-time reader, I would recommend that the serious Milton fan find a more well-thought-out and better organised edition for further study and enjoyment.

. Paradise Lost (Penguin Popular Classics)
by: John Milton
June 27, 1996
Only a fool could fault this masterpiece of the English language. From its outset and conception Milton leads us on a dark and mythical journey into the swirling depths of Christian religion. Ground breaking, controversial and challenging to the reader the descriptive artistic visions at work here are unparalleled by any other poetic work. His immense knowledge of religion and mythology weave together with a full set of intense dominating character personas and a brooding lurid dreamscape. Powerful emotion is stirred up within the reader and every macabre twist and turn without relent. The opening scene in particular paints a blood curdling portrait of sublime spiritual malevolence. The descriptive vision of Lucifer's army of fallen angels ... Read More:

. Paradise Lost (Oxford World's Classics)
by: John Milton

Writing Paradise Lost in the wake of the Restoration, Milton the Puritan was really in dire straits. Having been an outspoken advocate of the regicide during the Commonwealth as Latin Secretary, a key figure in Cromwell's propaganda team, he was only spared execution because of the intervention of powerful friends, among them the poet Andrew Marvell, and also his blindness was considered punishment enough. For Milton, then, to write such a daring, innovative, and provocative masterpiece, a scathing satire which is at times heretical, truly attests to the courage of this great spirit. If he had not been spared we would have been denied arguably the greatest poem written in English.
The poem operates on so many levels, all of them subtly ambiguous. ... Read More:

. Paradise Lost (Naxos Complete Classics)

If you're considering buying this, my advice is, don't hesitate (in case Naxos decide one day to withdraw it)! This reading of the poem is simply a minor marvel. What Lesser responds to are all the details of Milton's writing: that intelligence, strangeness, inventiveness, humour, mischief, Milton's way with worlds and words, too. Lesser reads without pomposity or over-weighting the lines. Milton's wonderful, voyaging sentences therefore uncurl like an unexpected landscape before us, so experimentally, with delay and suspense, shifting and adjusting meaning as the sentence rolls on, or suddenly undeceiving us with an unnerving undermining of what we think's going to be said...it's a terrific experience, to hear this. And especially interesting since, for Milton of course, ... Read More:

. Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained
by: John Milton
January 01, 2006
It pains me to think that 'Paradise lost' sat gathering dust, unappreciated, on my shelf for over 2 years. Having tried about 3 times to wade into it, I'd find myself beaten back by its immensly dense, flowery language. But to anyone who is even remotely put off by the 'thee's and the 'thou's or who thinks that Milton is inaccessable to all but the most learned scholars I would implore you, you simply MUST read this book. Once you've made your way through the first few pages you'll be amazed at just how accessible this piece of literary genius is. For those who don't know, this is an adaptation of the 'Genesis' creation myth, centering around the temptation of Adam and Eve by a rather disgruntled Satan. The poem begins with the expulsion of Satan and his rebel hoardes from the ... Read More:
