.Western Crete: Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes): Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes) by: Jonnie Godfrey, Elizabeth Karslake March 01, 2008 I bought three walking guides for a recent visit to Western Crete, and this was the nicest one: clear maps, good selection of walks of various lengths and in different kinds of terrain, nice mixture of the popular and the more quiet country lanes. We did five of the 31 included walks and found the descriptions clear and useful. The times that we went astray it was from not reading the instructions clearly enough, but hey, getting lost can be good fun too - though it was rather prickly! I think this just beats the Hirner/Murbock walking guide, though that is pretty good too; and the Wilson White Mountains guide, which seems more geared towards the trekking community. .Landscapes of Eastern Crete (Sunflower Countryside Guides) by: Jonnie Godfrey, Elizabeth Karslake April 24, 1986 I bought three walking guides for a recent visit to Western Crete, and this was the nicest one: clear maps, good selection of walks of various lengths and in different kinds of terrain, nice mixture of the popular and the more quiet country lanes. Bearing in mind we only tried to do four of the walks (09/01) described in this book, and that Sunflower guides for other locations have resulted in excellent walking holidays (La Gomera, La Palma and Madeira), a lot of the information contained here is at best misleading and at worst completely incorrect - sometimes it is hard to imagine that the authors have actually done some of the walks. The addendum helped a bit, but Sunflower guides still refuse to post the most up-to-date info on their web site. .Western Crete (Landscapes) by: Jonnie Godfrey, Elizabeth Karslake April 15, 2005 I liked this book when I got it - it seemed to give good, easy-to-follow descriptions of the walks. I bought it for just one of the walks, close to where we were staying (near Kolymbari). We set off one day around 4.30 p.m. - the walk was said to be 10 km, with the first 8 climbing up the mountain via the asphalt road, and the last 2 km on pathways cross-country almost directly downhill back into Kolymbari. It was August, and very hot, but the climb up was a good walk. Very demanding in the 30C heat, but fantastic views, as the book described.
