I found it difficult to know how to score this book. The book relys on rhetorical momentum rather than cold analysis but its style and the personal experience of the author described in the last chapter are compelling. Though I suspect that the book is principally aimed at children, it's a worthwhile read for any adult who wants to know how Christians defend their faith to atheists, and who wants to get an insight into the self-image of a Christian.

The book contains a number of logical flaws and basic errors of reasoning in its argument. They are not hard to spot for the intelligent reader. But they do not spoil the book and are in themselves interesting because they give an insight into the psychology of Christian faith.

"Understanding Intelligent Design" is intellectual child abuse aimed at the hearts and minds of children who lack ample appreciation and understanding as to what constitutes valid mainstream science; nothing more and nothing less. It is a well-written polemic co-written by Discovery Institute mendacious intellectual pornographer Bill Dembski and a "Christian" educator, Sean McDowell, who claim that Intelligent Design is truly a valid scientific alternative not only to contemporary evolutionary theory, but indeed, all of mainstream science, period. This is the rare occasion where I am reviewing a book here at Amazon.com that I have not yet read, but their publisher, Mr. David Bartlett, has reneged on his promise to send me gratis a review copy. I'm not a believer but I find the whole subject of faith, its causes and effects very interesting, and I'm always willing to look for understanding in others' points of view.

This book, however, has no merit whatsoever. Unfortunately reviewers are not allowed to give books less than one star.

McDowell's "answers" range from the inane (read the bible if you want proof of the bible), to the laughably ridiculous (you can get 125,000 sheep in a railway carriage so the Noah's Ark story is easily feasible), to the uninformed (the second Law of Thermodynamics disproves evolution) to downright lies (dinosaur footprints have been discovered. I can find numerous, easily refutable, examples of this stupidity on every page.

I found this book to be one of the best and most simply written reference books for the spectrum of today's religions. I think that it can be very helpful in conquering the wide-spread ignorance that surrounds different religious beliefs. However, before buying this book, one must realize that it is writtin from a bible-believing christian standpoint and therefore the ideas could most certianly be considered bias. However, in reading the book i think that you will find most of the information to be very factual. There is very little opinion and what opinion can be found is well presented by McDowell and Stewart. This is a must-buy for Christians.
